100 YEARS AGO…

Ground was broken on Rockdale’s modern high school building. The building would occupy a position approximately in the center of the big campus which includes two blocks of ground and will face east. This will afford a fine view of the building from the main residence section of the city.

A Boy Scout movement was started in Rockdale where the boys met at the Methodist Church and organized the Eagle Patrol of Troop 1, Boy Scouts of America. Reverend N.H. Melbert received his commission as Scout Master from headquarters in New York City and he was authorized to enroll scouts in Rockdale.

Area banks reported their totals for the previous year as follows: First National Bank of Rockdale, $299,414.39; Rockdale State Bank, $295,995.14; Citizens State Bank, $153,295.20; First State Bank of Milano, $64,104.99.

40 YEARS AGO…

Elizabeth Fenter, Rockdale City Secretary since 1974, was named city manager by unanimous vote of the City Council.

Rockdale native, Gale Marrs, was named the new manager of the Chamber of Commerce.

Rockdale State Bank celebrated its 75th anniversary with a party in the bank’s lobby. Three long-time bank customers received San Francisco Mint-vintage silver dollars valued (at that time) at $5.

Dr. Larry Jones, DDS, announced that he has reopened the dental offices formerly operated by the late Dr. Charles C. O’Connor.

20 YEARS AGO…

The first baby of 2002 was Shayde Baxter, weighing in at 6 pounds, 4 ounces, the son of Brian Baxter and Renea Jones born at 12:13 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 3.

The Richards Memorial Hospital board announced that they would be out of bankruptcy in about two months.

Clayton Smith and Justin Jones, seniors at Rockdale High School, were selected for induction into the 2001- 2002 National Honor Roll and appeared in the commemorative edition of the National Honor Roll yearbook.

10 YEARS AGO…

Alcoa announced it was changing the status of two of the six potlines at Rockdale Operations from “idled” to “permanently closed.”

Madisynn Braelynn Ryen Morgan, Rockdale’s first baby of 2012. Parents are Courtnee Whitt and Justin Morgan and brother, three-year-old Shane. Madisynn won more than $800 in prizes from participating merchants. She was born at 1:05 p.m. Jan. 2.

Facing a shortfall of one million dollars in state funding for 2012-13, the Rockdale ISD was looking towards personnel reductions, and other remedies, to deal with next school year’s budget.

A benefit to assist longtime Rockdale-Thorndale area resident Andrea Bailey was set for Jan. 28 at The Ranch. Activities include a morning motorcycle run, chili supper, live auction and music by Scott Leonard. Bailey had been diagnosed with stage III-B cervical cancer and has no medical insurance.
