100 YEARS AGO…

Mr. and Mrs. Fred H. Graves were the delightful hosts of Ye Merrie Wives Club. Ferns and exquisite pink sweet peas, rich shaded pansies and pink and white carnations graced the reception rooms where tables were arranged for the club game of 42. At the conclusion of games, prizes were awarded. Afterwards a delicious two course menu was served consisting of chicken salad, tomato aspic, hot rolls, salted nuts and Russian tea. The second course was pineapple ice and fruit cake. The plate favors were dainty Japanese fans.

Scarborough and Hicks was having a sale on quality brand aluminum ware and every piece was guaranteed to last for 20 years.

Jeff T. Kemp, former county clerk, and one of the best known and most popular men in Matchless Milam, was appointed to the office of County Judge to succeed the Hon. Graham Gillis, resigned.

40 YEARS AGO…

Milam County voters gave bingo legalization more than a 2-1 majority, and Milam organizations wishing to hold legal bingo games were expected to begin filing for permits.

At least $500 in merchandise was taken in an overnight break-in at a downtown clothing store. J.B. White Co. employees discovered the break-in the following morning, according to Tom Brown, store owner.

Marcie Reynolds, who is leaving Rockdale to move to Austin after two years as Chamber of Commerce manager, was honored with a reception at the Patterson Civic Center. Mrs. Reynolds received a plaque praising her service to the Chamber, and a special gift, a music box.

20 YEARS AGO…

City council members and the board of the Lucy Hill Patterson Memorial Library, hoping to get a stalled expansion project off the back burner, hired architect David Volter of Volter and Associates for $19,750 to come up with a scaled-down, financially-viable plan to expand into the adjacent Vogel building.

Ashley Lynette Garza, daughter of Arthur and Sharon Garza of Rockdale, was selected finalist for Texas’ 22nd annual Homecoming Queen selection which was to be held at the Hyatt Regency Dallas-Fort Worth Airport.

Emissions from Alcoa Power Plant generating units 1, 2 and 3 were ruled illegal by the state, federal agencies following lengthy investigations triggered by environmental groups including Neighbors for Neighbors which opposed the company’s proposed 3-Oaks lignite mine in Lee and Bastrop counties.

10 YEARS AGO…

Two pistols believed to have been at the scene of last April’s shotgun slaying of a San Gabriel woman in her home unexpectedly turned up in Rockdale, as police arrested a 39-yearold Rockdale man on a child sexual assault charge.

Richards Memorial Hospital, which has been no stranger to recovering from financial crises in its 37-year history, was bouncing back from its latest one with remarkable speed. “In the past 13 months (since the old Blackhawk Health Care was reconstituted under a new owner) we have been able to retire our liability by 50 percent,” administrator Jeff Madison said.
