100 YEARS AGO…
The biggest motion picture ever brought to Rockdale was scheduled to appear at the Maxie Theater. It was “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse,” a million-dollar master-picture by the Metro Pictures Corp.
“Reporter ads get the grapes,” said Manager Frank Young of Scarbrough & Hicks Co. Young had proven the above statement many times before, but on this week he had the biggest rush which his popular firm had experienced in years.
Fire Chief Percy Diehl asked The Reporter to remind readers that the practice of automobile drivers rushing to fires and getting in the way of the fire truck is very dangerous and should be discontinued. On several occasions autos have gotten in front of the truck and delayed the progress of the firemen, at the same time endangering the lives of several people. The proper thing to do is to wait until the fire truck goes by and then follow it. Do not attempt to beat the truck to the fire .
40 YEARS AGO…
Funeral services for Ernie Lawrence, long-time junior high principal and high school coach, were pending at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home. Lawrence, 65, died in Athens, Greece where he had been taking treatments for lung cancer.
Kathy Holt of the Rockdale High School Future Farmers of America chapter showed the grand champion dairy entry at the Milam County Junior Livestock Show in Cameron.
A PTO-sponsored school volunteer program was begun in the Rockdale Elementary School in 1981. Since then 25 regular and eight substitute volunteers had provided more than 200 hours of volunteer service in the classroom with 13 teachers in grades 1-5.
Mixed fryer parts were on sale at Piggly Wiggly for 49 cents per pound.
20 YEARS AGO…
IBC Bank-Rockdale, formerly NBC Bank and Rockdale State Bank, which has served the community since 1907, announced that they will be acquired by Citizens National Bank of Milam County.
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6525 celebrated its 50 birthday with a spaghetti supper and dance at the post home on US 79 West.
Bauerfinancial Reports Inc. announced that Rockdale Federal Credit Union had earned another 5-star “Superior” rating, denoting the highest level of strength, safety and performance.
10 YEARS AGO…
The 35th consecutive Black History Month series, authored by former Rockdale teacher Susie Sansom Piper, was to begin the first week of February in The Reporter. “The Other Side of the Tracks” began its fifth year with biographies of Rockdale women both living and deceased, and their contributions.
Kelly Brymer, Pre-Kindergarten teacher at St. Paul Lutheran School in Thorndale was named the 2012 Outstanding Early Childhood Teacher in the Texas district, according to school principal Cindy Melcher. “She has been instrumental in the development of St. Paul’s early childhood program,” Melcher said. In 1999, Brymer began with seven students in a small classroom for a half day session and is now the director of a two classroom-two teacher program that serves more than 20 students in the Thorndale area.
Alpha Tau Delta, local service organization, donated $10,000 to the City of Rockdale to help with the building of Sumuel Park. The money was raised from the organization’s annual Dewberry Jam Fun Run/Walk.
