100 YEARS AGO…
Toon Lewis, 42, brother of Branch Lewis and Misses Carrie and Maggie Lewis of Rockdale, died by drowning at Manila, Philippine Islands, according to brief information conveyed in a telegram from the war department received in Rockdale. Particulars are lacking and the family was left in doubt as to the details of his death.
A rousing mass meeting was held at the Chamber of Commerce rooms to discuss the feasibility of having a grand homecoming of all ex-students, teachers and trustees of Rockdale Public School, since organization in 1884. Those present were called upon to express their views in regard to the proposition and after going well into he matter all seemed to get very enthusiastic and unanimously voted to have the homecoming and make it the biggest affair of its kind ever pulled off in Central Texas.
Tom Felton Sr., 89, died at his family home near San Gabriel, with interment taking place in the family burying ground. Decedent was one of the oldest and most influential citizens of the county.
40 YEARS AGO… Tamara Hebert, 17, a
Tamara Hebert, 17, a Rockdale High School senior who was also a full-time Temple Junior College student taking night courses, returned from the 33rd International Science and Engineering Fair at Houston with more honors.
Jayne McDaniel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Billy T. McDaniel, was valedictorian of the 112-member Rockdale High School graduating class of 1982. RHS Principal Walter Pond said salutatorian was Sue Lantz, daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. Glade Lantz.
20 YEARS AGO…
Rockdale Big Blue band members went on a three-day trip to the Houston/Galveston area May 3-5. The trip began with a performance at Langham High School in Houston in the Director’s Choice Competition. The band received a trophy and a Division 1 “Excellent” rating.
Crystal Anderson, the multi-sport senior standout, ended her high school athletics career with a bronze medal at Myers Stadium at the Class 3A state track meet.
Rockdale Federal Credit Union raised over $1,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network, selling hot dogs, dunking booth throws and tickets to win an automobile. RFCU workers also helped with children’s games. Former employee Hobbs and daughter M’Lynn were beneficiaries of the Children’s Miracle Network with medical procedures.
10 YEARS AGO…
A 49-year-old Rockdale woman died Sunday night in her driveway from a shotgun blast to the back of the head and her long-term, 46-year-old boyfriend was charged with murder. It was the fourth homicide in just over a year in South Milam County, the second in 12 days. Sheila Owens was pronounced dead at the scene, 804 N. Wilcox, by Pct. 2 Justice of the Peace Sam Berry. Stephen Daniell was charged with murder and remains in the Milam County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond.
The Rockdale Municipal Development District (MDD) was to host a facilitated “community visioning” meeting May 24 at the Patterson Civic Center, according to Tom Manskey, executive director. Manskey said the session would get under way with refreshments, followed by the community visioning session. Everyone interested in moving Rockdale forward was urged to bring their positive ideas and attend, he said.
