100 YEARS AGO…
The people of the Forest Grove-Oak Hill communities was set to hold a big basket picnic and barbecue at the Grove, to which the general public was invited, and to which candidates were especially invited. All candidates were to be given opportunity to speak. The graveyard working that was originally spoken of in connection would not be held. Folks had already cleaned off the graveyard and the day would be spent in true picnic style.
The Fourth of July picnic given under the auspices of the American Legion at Rockdale attracted a crowd of approximately 5,000 people. There was an entertaining program, fine barbecue dinner, speaking by district committeeman of the Legion and state and county candidates, also a ball game between the Legion teams of Rockdale and Cameron.
The Sans Souci Club met with Mrs. I.P. Sessions for one of the most enjoyable affairs the club has ever had. House decorations were in ferns, zinnias and Mrs. Arron Ward roses. Forty-two was played, the score cards featuring the American flag and Independence Day. The hostess served a salad and ice course.
The Camp Fire Girls returned from a most enjoyable two-day camp at Randle Lake. Mrs. Perry and Mrs. Summers proved themselves perfect guardians, and they were especially nice in teaching the girls to row and swim.
40 YEARS AGO… Deputy Sheriff Thomas
Harris received the officer-of-the-year trophy from Rockdale Knights of Columbus Grand Knight Paul Konarik and also received a standing ovation at the second annual Milam County Law Enforcement Appreciation Barbecue sponsored by the local KCs at the KC Hall.
Milam County Commissioners passed a resolution agreeing to issue up to $8 million in revenue bonds on behalf of Alcoa’s Rockdale Works. Commissioners also appointed John Sonntag to a vacant Justice of the Peace post, and discussed leasing buildings in both Rockdale and Cameron for county offices.
20 YEARS AGO…
One of Rockdale’s most honored, and most wellliked, teachers was leaving the local school district to accept a job with the Texas Education Agency (TEA). Mark Brady, who completed his 21st school year as a Rockdale ISD teacher, was to start his new job with the TEA’s Region VI Education Service Center.
Steve’s Texaco owner/ operator Steve Pruett hosted youth from the recently held Alcoa Academic and Recreation Day Camp, attended by 75 youth over a three-week period. The youth, under the supervision of camp director Angela White, toured Steve’s garage to learn about the automotive technician trade and basic car maintenance.
10 YEARS AGO…
The long-awaited photo history of Rockdale by Dr. Lucile Estell was now available to the public. Titled Rockdale, with more than 200 historic photos, it was priced at $21.99 and was available at major bookstores, on-line bookstores and from the publisher, www.arcadiapublishing. com.
It was stars, stripes and heat as the City of Milano hosted its annual Independence Day parade, with this year’s theme “America the Beautiful.” Temperatures topped out at 98 on July 4.
