100 YEARS AGO…
Mrs. C.M. Sessions entertained the Scrap Book Club honoring Mesdames Nell Clement of Dallas and Mrs. Lee Clark of Waco, two former members that were visiting in town. The reception rooms were beautiful in zinnias, daisies and roses of the deepest hues. After a number of games of 42 the hostess assisted by Mesdames Clark and Marshall served a most appetizing two-course luncheon. Salads, cheese straws, potato chips, Citron sandwiches, tea and cake with cream.
The Dixie Theater reduced the price of adult admissions to 22 cents. The children’s price remained the same at 10 cents.
B.O. Alford brought in the first bale of cotton of the season. The bale weighed 432 pounds and was purchased by Henne & Meyer Co. at 23 cents. The seed brought $12.50. The Chamber of Commerce at Rockdale gave a prize to Mr. Alford of $50. He also won a similar prize year before last and was just a day late last year. He lived on one of J.F Coffield places which was located in the Rockdale-Minerva oil field near Rockdale.
Ninety-nine members of the American Legion scaled Mount Hood at the legion’s second annual climb held July 16. A party of 249 participated in the base camp activities which began the afternoon before the climb. A pack mule, which succumbed to heart disease at an altitude of 9,000 feet and plunged down the mountain into a deep crevasse, was the only casualty.
40 YEARS AGO…
Willa Mae Wieser, who had served as Milam County Clerk since June, had been officially named the nominee of that office of the County Democratic Party in the November general election.
Kimbo the Clown was to be on the streets of downtown Rockdale. The Chamber of Commerce promotion would feature free balloons for the kids according to Gale Marrs, Chamber manager.
20 YEARS AGO…
Rockdale Hospital District’s board of directors reached another milestone in their turnaround of Richard’s Memorial Hospital when they burned the facility’s original bond note. Longtime board member Dr. John Weed III and administrative assistant and board secretary Janet Staub did the honors, taking a Bic lighter to the document.
Over 142 matches were played over two days in the 21st Rockdale Open Youth tournament, the last one being completed about midnight on Thursday, according to Geneva Irby, youth tournament director.
10 YEARS AGO…
Sheriff David Greene rolled to a new term in a Republican Primary runoff election, ending what was probably the longest single Milam County primary contest ever. Greene polled 1,560 votes to 1,177 for challenger Greg Kouba to win the GOP nomination. That’s a 57-percent to 43-percent spread.
Milam County picked up a check for $25,000 as its “mass gathering fee” for the largest event ever held in the county. Officials of Insomniac Productions returned to Apache Pass, site of the April 21 Nocturnal Wonderland event, to present the check to County Judge Dave Barkemeyer.
A reception was held for new Thorndale ISD band director Colin Chichurka in the THS band hall and sponsored by the Thorndale Band Boosters. Chichurka came to Thorndale from Hallettsville and succeeded director Scott Simmons, who accepted a position at Taylor High School.
