100 YEARS AGO… The election held in the Gause good roads district on Aug. 11, carried by the overwhelming odds of 217 to 5. The election was for bonds in the amount of $35,000, the money to be used for building good roads and more particularly for the purpose of building that precinct’s portion of the B.V.D. Highway, connecting with the new bridge soon to be built over the Brazos River.
Miss Veda Craig of Chicago headed a team of demonstrators for the Texas Power & Light Co. conducted a two-day demonstration in Rockdale. A modern electric range was used in the demonstration and all manner of articles were cooked and served to the numerous ladies, men and children in attendance.
H.C. Vance delightfully entertained the Tuesday Bridge Club at a morning party. Mrs. John de Venter of Houston captured guest high score prize, two exquisite hand-made handkerchiefs, the work of the hostess. At the conclusion of the games, the following delicious luncheon was served: tomatoes stuffed with chicken salad, wafers, pineapple salad, chipped potatoes, olives and iced tea.
40 YEARS AGO… Fred P. Bergeron, Alcoa’s Texas area manager and Rockdale’s operations manager, elected to retire, but would continue in the same position and capacity for a period of time necessary to affect an orderly transition, the company announced. Upon completion of the transition period, Jack Drake was set to become area and operations manager. The position of plant manager which Drake held since 1977 will be eliminated.
Damon Kipp Farrar, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Farrar of Rockdale, was enlisted in the Air Force’s Delayed Enlistment Program, according to Sgt. L.R. Halstead, Air Force recruiter in Temple.
The Doss Dairy, located just west of Rockdale off US 79, won the outstanding dairy and ranching award at the recent Taylor Soil & Water Conservation District’s awards banquet.
20 YEARS AGO… Rockdale Independent School District, and its taxpayers, lost $21,347,119 in its tax base during the protest season before the Milam County Appraisal District’s Appraisal Review Board.
Alvie King, who coached or played under longtime Milano basketball coach Jay Wise for the past 17 years, was named Wise’s replacement as MHS boys head basketball coach.
10 YEARS AGO… The Buckholts City Council fired Police Chief James Blackmon, following a closed session at City Hall. Blackmon was charged on July 5 with falsifying paperwork in connection with appointment of officers to that North Milam County city’s police department.
United Steelworkers Local 4895 was set to hold its annual picnic at The Ranch, according to David Edmonds, spokesman. The Ranch is located at 415 W. Cameron (US 79) near the Calhoun Drive intersection in Rockdale.
Buckwind Blue Bakken of Milano received his degree from Texas A&M University during commencement ceremonies held at Reed Arena. Bakken received a bachelor’s of science degree in sociology with a minor in geography.
