100 YEARS AGO… After having been given promises and promises, with none of them fulfilled, the School Board, after an inspection of the new building and finding it in no parts ready for occupancy, decided to open school the following week as previously announced using the old buildings as heretofore. (Editor’s note, this was the three-story building next to the elementary school which has since been torn down.)
The Matinee Musical Club again took up its work, after an adjournment for the summer months, having as hostess Mary Alice Porter. Officers elected for the ensuing year were Mrs. T.S. Barkley, president; Mary Alice Porter, vice-president; Mrs. A.A. Coffield, recording secretary; Mrs. E.A. Camp, corresponding secretary; Mrs. Wynette Marrs, treasurer; and Mrs. P.H. Perry, parliamentarian.
Miss Merle Lucas of Waco was set to give private piano lessons at the high school this year. Lucas is a graduate of the Music Department of Baylor University and had one year of post-graduate work. The Committee on Teachers of Baylor University recommended her very highly as a music teacher. She was set to arrive in Rockdale and parents interested in having their children take piano lessons in the high school building were encouraged to see her as soon as possible.
40 YEARS AGO… Official dedication ceremonies for Charlie Martin Park, named in honor of Milano’s first mayor and school superintendent, were scheduled.
Chris Holcombe, Milam County extension agent for home economics in Cameron, had been named to receive the Distinguished Service Award for 1982— the highest honor given by the National Association of Extension Home Economists.
20 YEARS AGO… Up to 9,000 visitors were expected at Alcoa’s Rockdale Operations for the fifth open house in the plants 50-year history.
Someone who bought a Texas Two-Step lottery ticket at Rockdale’s USA Food Mart was $800,000 richer. At least they would be as soon as the Texas Lottery Commission knew who they were.
Ofc. Marsha Demsky and Dispatcher Jennifer Sellers were credited with saving the life of a six-month-old girl who was not breathing when she was brought to the Rockdale Police Department by her parents.
10 YEARS AGO… Ac k nowle d g i ng t he “post-Alcoa” era, the City of Rockdale expressed an interest in giving special business incentives for firms providing employment for Rockdale-area workers. The city council would look at creating a policy to study tax abatements after Miller- Starnes Chevrolet-Buick, which was considering options which may have included moving from Rockdale, requested aid.
A Civil War reenactment was to highlight the second annual Central Texas Outdoor Expo set for Sept. 21-22 at Apache Pass. Activities began Sept. 21 with a margarita and salsa taste-off and battle of the bands competition.
