The Junior Matinee Musical Club met with Miriam Lowenstein as hostess. After a short business discussion, the following members performed piano solos: Ward Lightfoot, Aileen James, Irena Wisecup, Paulena Roundtree, Amber Estelle, Dorothy Lee and Mary Frances Murphree. In a musical contest Ward Lightfoot was the successful contestant and was given a box of mints.
Citizens anywhere within trading distance of Rockdale were interested to hear the announcement that the regular monthly “Trade Days” were to be re-established beginning with the second Monday in October.
A deal of considerable magnitude, and one which may mean much to Rockdale, was brought to light by the filing of lease papers in the county clerk’s office at Cameron whereby the Southwestern Securities Co., of McAlester, Oklahoma, acquired the property known as the Standard Coal Co., formerly the Federal Fuel Co., nine miles southwest of Rockdale.
40 YEARS AGO… A 1,600-square-foot addition to the new Senior Citizen Center on Green Street was well under way, according to Denise Doss, center staffer, who accepted a $5,000 check from the Alcoa Foundation. Mrs. Doss said the expansion would help alleviate crowding at the center, especially during its noon lunch programs.
The first Miss Rockdale Fair Queen contestants were announced. In the running were Janet Jackson, Amy Serpas, Daphne Taylor, Mary Brogger, Lynn Henson, Donna Schraeder and Leslie Nink.
20 YEARS AGO… Alcoa’s Rockdale Operations threw itself a memorable 50th anniversary party and about 8,000 people went along for the ride. There were tours of the mine and smelter, along with “The Great Train Ride” from the Alcoa Atomizer to near Rockdale Sandow & Southern Railroad. The train rides drew 1,350 riders and grossed $15,000 for the Rockdale Historical Society’s downtown depot renovation project.
Rockdale remembered the first anniversary of the 9-11 attacks with prayer, speeches and more than a few tears. In addition to three school observances and night worship service, there were also observances at Richards Memorial Hospital and the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department.
10 YEARS AGO… The 2012 Rockdale High School homecoming parade was set to roll downtown on Bell Street Sept. 26, according to Debbie Brinkley, spokesperson.
Historic Apache Pass was the place to welcome in fall as the second annual Central Texas Outdoor Expo unreeled beside the San Gabriel River. The expo featured a nighttime dance with Little Texas, food, a barbecue cookoff, all kinds of competitions and exhibits by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department and Master Naturalists.
