10-20-40-100 YEARS AGO

E.W. Smith with the Sanitary Engineering Department of the State Board of Health told a group of Rockdalians that dengue was strictly a mosquito borne disease and not transferable from one patient to another, so a vigorous fight against the mosquito was urged. The mosquito bites a person afflicted with the disease, then bites a well person, infecting him. Other mosquitoes feed on this person and so on, thus spreading the disease. The species of mosquito which carries dengue is different from that which carries malaria, so swat all mosquitoes, no matter what.

The Thursday Reading Club met in regular session on Sept. 14, the first of the year 1922-23, with Mrs. J.T. Hale, a gracious and graceful host. A three-course luncheon was served. The shades of evening were falling before goodbye was spoken, they meet with Mrs. H.C. Meyer Sept. 28.

20 YEARS AGO… Investigators from the Milam County Sheriff’s Department were uncertain over the fate of two victims from a Friday incident. Deputy Sheriff Greg Kouba said two rare Kenyan Crested Red-Faced Guineas were reported stolen by owner Bobby Ray Coldiron. “They are pretty rare birds,” Kouba said. “A pair is worth about $600.”

The “information highway” came to a screeching halt in Rockdale for a few hours. Long-distance telephone and internet service was interrupted for about four hours when a phone line was inadvertently cut in Williamson County.
