100 YEARS AGO....

There were 50 producing oil wells and “no dry holes” in the Rockdale-Tracy Oil Field. Wells were shallow, at an average depth of 300 feet.

The Rockdale School Board elected Fred Graves as its president. Other members were Ben Loewenstein Jr., W. A. Coffield, T. A. Rountree, Conn Isaacs and John Esten Cooke.

The Reporter reported Scarbrough & Hicks “had just fitted up a commodious ladies rest room adjoining the ladies ready to wear department.” Yes, that is exactly the way it was worded.

More “good roads” bond elections were being scheduled in Milam County, including a $115,000 package for Buckholts, $80,000 for Ben Arnold and $30,000 for Clarkson.

FORTY YEARS AGO....

W. H. Cooke received the Outstanding Citizen award and Richard Thrasher picked up the Citizen of the Year award as the Rock-dale Chamber of Commerce held its annual banquet in the VFW Hall.

Banquet speaker was native Rockdalian Jack Kyle, assistant director of business for the Texas Prison System.

Milam County Commissioners had called a special session after Alcoa indicated it would “use all legal avenues available in pursuit of an equitable 1979 distribution of county taxes.

A motion by Milam County Judge Phil Smith to name Rockdale State Bank as county depository died for lack of a second

TWENTY YEARS AGO....

The $200,000 goal to enable the city library to move into the adjacent Vogel Building was said to be “in sight” as the fund climbed to $121,000.

Garna Christian, a history professor at the University of Houston, authored a scholarly article examining the life of George Sessions Perry, Rockdale native and award-winning author.

A golf tourney to benefit Rockdale’s Institute For Teaching God’s Word was to draw several Dallas Cowboy players and a coach.

Jackson’s Valhol, a locally owned thoroughbred, won the $500,000 Arkansas Derby in just his third start and was headed to the Kentucky Derby.

TEN YEARS AGO....

A Dallas resident was facing a murder charge in the shooting death of Rockdale native Germaine Dawson, a senior at the University of North Texas.

Rockdale ISD trustees okayed a plan to move Rockdale High School to an eight-period day.

The Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department answered a report that lightning had struck a Morrison Street house and arrived to find that was, indeed, the case the bolt did not set the home on fire. Some electrical damage was reported.

The Thorndale ISD had narrowed the list of superintendent hopefuls from 39 to 8 and were scheduling interviews. The post had been vacant since the resignation of Gene Solis who became superintendent of the Whitney ISD.
