10-20-40-100 YEARS AGO 100 YEARS AGO…

An item of interest to all readers of The Reporter was found in the announcement that the old firm of Perry and Quebe Pharmacy would hereafter be called Quebe and Prewitt Pharmacy. Our fellow townsman, A.P. Perry, Jr. disposed of his interest in the firm with which he had been connected for so long.

The next Trades Day, which was to be held in Rockdale on Nov. 13, bid fair to be the most successful event of its kind ever held in the city. The merchants of Rockdale were cooperating with the Chamber of Commerce, and all visitors to the city on that date was to have the opportunity of securing bargains in all kinds of merchandise at a savings in dollars and cents that would surprise them. Every merchant in Rockdale would offer one or more items of merchandise at greatly reduced prices.

Ye Merrie Wives Club were most delightfully entertained in the home of Mr. and Mrs. O.K. Phillips. Living room, dining room and reception rooms with their attractive furnishings seemed to have been converted into a beautiful rose garden, with roses everywhere massed in the most artistic arrangement. Tables were placed for the favorite diversion of 42 and all entered into the games with interest and spirit. After the games an ice course was served most attractively in colors of yellow and white. Unusual favors in lacquered art were presented to each one present.

40 YEARS AGO…

“Music Leader,” the Rockdale horse that ran in the Kentucky Derby May 1, was on a roll, winning back-to-back weekends in Louisiana. Music won the $16,000 allowance race and Louisiana Downs on Oct. 10 and on Oct. 16 won the $25,000-added Bossier City Stakes, a 6-1/2-furlough event, besting a class field of 3-year-olds. Linwood Mehaffey was co-owner of the horse.

Alcoa Lake, which had been closed to the public since July 1, was to reopen and would remain open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. The lake was closed to the public when water temperatures climbed during the early summer, the result of the addition of the Sandow 4 power plant unit. The lake was involved in power plant cooling operations.

20 YEARS AGO…

Julie Birkhead of the Rockdale Junior FFA exhibited the grand champion steer at the 2002 Rockdale Fair. She sold her grand champ to Russell & Sons Construction for $8,610 plus $405 added money for a total of $9,015.

Megan Davidson, daughter of Lloyd and Leslie Davidson, was crowned Miss Rockdale Fair Queen in the high school auditorium before a crowd of more than 600. First runner- up was Valarie Moore, daughter of Bobby and Vicki Moore. Second runner-up was Megan McQuary, daughter of James and Denise McQuary.

10 YEARS AGO…

Rockdale High School’s Big Blue Band, directed by Adrian Acevedo, earned straight Division I (superior) ratings at the UIL Region Marching Contest at Giddings High School. It was the first time since 2008 the band had earned a first division rating and advanced to the area contest and the first time since 2006 the band earned straight first division ratings at UIL marching contest. The band was to compete at the Area Central Marching Contest at Lumpkins Stadium in Waxahachie.

The first of two public meetings to introduce Rockdale residents to the city’s proposed new master plan was set for 5:30 to 7 p.m. Oct. 30 at Patterson Civic Center. City Manager Kelvin Knauf said the meetings would be of the “come and go” variety.
