10-20-40-100 YEARS AGO 100 YEARS AGO… The carnival given by the Rockdale High School last week was very successful. About $200 was added to the school fund. This money was greatly needed and it was assured to the citizens of Rockdale that every cent would be returned to the children through a better library and other equipment.

The Thorndale High football squad journeyed to Rockdale and suffered a defeat of 38-6 to the Rockdale Tigers. Both teams made a good showing, but the game was easily Rockdale’s after the first down. There was some misunderstanding about Thorndale’s score, some thinking that Thorndale made two points by a safety on the first kick off. This was, however, a mistake and the only counter that team made was a touchdown in the third quarter.

Among the victims of dengue fever were Principal H.B. Hughes of the high school and H.H. Coffield of the firm of Coffield & Hale.

R.L. King of Abilene had accepted a position with Quebe & Prewitt, the druggist. Mr. King was a registered pharmacist and an experienced druggist.

The Reporter received from R.P. Dickerson a Puerto Rico yam potato that was big enough to feed the editorial family for a week. Mr. Dickerson brought to the office a quantity of these potatoes, weighing as much as six pounds and said he considered their size remarkable for the dry weather during which they grew.

40 YEARS AGO… City Councilmen approved specifications for the thirdyear paving project under the city’s community development (HUD) block grant, a project which would virtually complete street paving in the Southeast Rockdale target area.

The council also extended the target area for housing rehabilitation and were presented with a $1,000 check by the Rockdale Tennis Association.

20 YEARS AGO… A big Old Glory was unfurled in streamers by students in a patriotic halftime show by the Rockdale High School Big Blue Band which joined forces with the junior high band.

The Post Oak Savannah Groundwater Conservation district was affirmed in two landslide votes in Milam and Burleson counties.

Milano Volunteer Fire Department lost a 1984 Ford Ambulance in an electrical fire. Losses were estimated at $58,000. The fire started in the ambulance and the building was also damaged.

10 YEARS AGO… The Rockdale Historical Society was to hold its annual homemade chili meal in the New Salem HD Clubhouse at Fair Park. Proceeds from the meal would go toward the restored I&GN Depot-Museum, a project of the Historical Society.

Organizers of the annual Community Outreach free Thanksgiving lunch, to be hosted by New Hope Baptist Church Nov. 17 at the New Salem Clubhouse in Fair Park, needed more donations and volunteer helpers.

Rockdale veterans were to be honored the day after the traditional Nov. 11 Veterans Day, in a giant outdoor ceremony at Tiger Field. There would also be three meals during the day honoring veterans, breakfasts at Veterans of Foreign Wars posts in Rockdale and Thorndale and lunch at Rockdale Junior-High School.
