In oil news, Capt. A.J. Coyle of the firm of Coyle & Corning, Mexia operators, stated that his firm would rapidly drill out their recent purchases in the Rockdale-Minerva sector of the Milam County shallow field. Their No. 6 Niehaus was being cemented, and two other rigs were being shipped in which would be set to work immediately. Locations for 24 other wells had also been made. Coyle & Corning paid $72,500 cash for the Newell Oil & Gas Co., settled production at 23 barrels, with 100-acre lease off the C.F. Niehaus tract. Also, the Clifton Bros. 25 barrels settled production with 71 acres off the Lucas Tract. Capt. Coyle won his title in France in the aviation service on the front line. Production of the Rockdale-Minerva sector ran to a total of 12,880 barrels in the month of October.

The Matinee Musical Club met with Mrs. W.C. Marrs. The attendance was small on account of illness—( Editor’s note: Rockdale was going through an epidemic with Dengue Fever at this time.)— but a splendid program was rendered. There was much interested over discussions for the afternoon. Quite a spirited game of grand opera composers was indulged in, Mrs. W.A. Coffield being the lucky winner of the prize. The hostess served a delicious 6 o’clock dinner in the dining room. The guests, after spending a most enjoyable afternoon, were loath to leave.

A bazaar, a regular gift shop for Christmas time, was to be given by the Camp Fire Girls. Everyone planned to come and purchase beautiful Christmas presents cheap. Hand-painted bonbon boxes, lovely hand-painted flower bowls, hand-painted iced tea glasses, candle-stock holders, aprons and powder puffs, were a few of the articles to be sold. Also, you could find boudoir caps, hand-painted flower pots with growing bulbs, hand-painted bottles containing bath water, numbers for card tables and many other handmade presents.

So much for the “Season of Good Cheer.” Some of the City of Rockdale’s Christmas decorations were missing and the Chamber of Commerce issued a plea for their return, with no questions asked.

Austin Shriners, a mounted posse from Texas A&M University, horses, antique and classic cars, bands and, of course, Santa Claus would be featured in the annual downtown Christmas Parade sponsored by the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce.

Sixteen Rockdale 4-H’ers got “down and dirty” at a Nov. 13 community service project at Manor Oaks Nursing Facility. The group cleaned out flower beds and planted new flowers.

It’s official. Milam County was now part of a permanent conservations district. Directors of the new Post Oak Savannah Groundwater Conservation District met at the Milam County Courthouse to formalize the transition to a permanent district.

It was “high tech” time for Rockdale ISD trustees as the board okayed purchase of 180 Chromebook laptop computers for three campuses and approved a wiring upgrade for the district’s new, more sophisticated, phone system. Meeting in regular monthly session in the Central Administration Building, the board approved an expenditure of $52,977 for the laptops, which would be used at the high school, junior-high and elementary campuses.

The steel frames were up in the new Milano Volunteer Fire Department station and shelter on US 79 in Milano. The 3,700-square-foot shelter was set to be finished in February and would serve as the department’s kitchen and dining area. An additional 7,200-squarefoot building would also be constructed to house the MVFD’s fire trucks and was to include four drive-through bays. B&B Plumbing & Construction of Bryan was in charge of the project, which was funded by a $250,000 FEMA-based grant and with $200,000 being raised by the MVFD.
