100 YEARS AGO…

The Rockdale Chamber of Commerce had reason to be proud of its November Trade Days, which had brought the largest crowd in years. The occasion was fostered by the Chamber of Commerce under the direction of it’s Trade Extension Committee, which was assisted by willing workers in all departments. It was a jolly, happy-go-lucky, companionable crowd, and the events of the day did more towards cementing a friendly relationship between town and country than anything that had happened in Regal Rockdale in many years.

Hon. E.A. Camp, accompanied by a delegation of citizens from Gause, Milano and Thorndale, and also by County Engineer Mitchell of Cameron, went to Austin to appeared before the State Highway Commission in the interest of the Gause and Milano road districts, in regard to state and federal aid. The delegation was told that aid had already been promised on these roads, and that as soon as estimates of the contracts had been supplied the allotment would be made out of any funds available at the time.

The next number of the Lyceum Course being offered under the auspices of the Rockdale Parent-Teacher Association, was “The Collins Novelty Duo,” which was to appear at the high school auditorium. This duo consisted of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Collins of the White & Myers circuit.

40 YEARS AGO…

The new population figures for Rockdale, which went up on the Texas Highway Department’s signs around town recently, reflected a 20% increase. The 1980 census figure was 5,611 over the 1970 census number of 4,655.

A Rockdale downtown business was back to normal after a “flood” which caused an estimated $8,000 damage. Mary Ann Shoppe owner Mozelle Williams said the damage was caused by water gushing out of a sink in the beauty salon at the rear of the dress shop.

Community support was being sought by school officials and police to help stop a rash of window break-ins at the old junior high building located on the elementary school campus. Police said about 30 windows in the 60-year-old building, vacant since the new junior high opened in 1980, were broken over the holiday weekend, and “between 50 and 60” windows in the building had been shattered.

20 YEARS AGO…

Visitors to Rockdale’s Coffi eld Regional Airport were dwarfed by two Navy Seal Dragon HE-53 E helicopters which made unscheduled landings. The first chopper landed with an oil line leak and the second flew in with parts to repair the first.

A 45-year-old Cameron man and his 26-year-old niece died when their motorcycle was in collision with a car in heavy “football night” traffic on US 77 in Minerva.

10 YEARS AGO…

Santa was still coming to Rockdale. He’s just going to show up one week later this year. Rockdale’s annual Christmas parade and party wouldn’t be on the first weekend of December, as had been the case in past years. All those activities would still be held but they were coming on Dec. 8.

A request for $10,000 for the Rockdale Railroad Museum foundation was to be an action item when the Rockdale Municipal Development District (MDD) board meets in regular session at City Hall.
