10-20-40-100 YEARS AGO 100 YEARS AGO…

The members of the board of trustees of the Rockdale Public School tendered a banquet to the lettermen of the high school football squad. The affair was given at the Mrosko Café. In addition to the football boys and the trustees, there were present Mayor H.C. Meyer and City Attorney E.A. Camp; J.M. Hodges, superintendent of schools; H.B. Hughes, principal and coach, and Rev. N.H. Melbert. Mr. Camp acted in the capacity of toastmaster and was at his best. Under the supervision of young ladies of the high school. The banquet board was tastily decorated with cut flowers and ferns, while the school colors of blue and gold were prominent. A victrola furnished music.

The home talent show given at the city hall auditorium by members of the local American Legion and the Rockdale Band was an unqualified success, insofar as the entertain feature was concerned, while financially it lacked a whole lot of being a failure, the gross receipts being around $100. The house was crowded to the standing room limit, and the gallery was filled.

The piano recital given by the music pupils of Miss Merie Lucas at the high school auditorium, proved one of the most entertaining events Rockdale had seen in recent years. The auditorium was crowded to its utmost capacity, and the audience voiced its approval of the program in no uncertain manner. Miss Lucas was shown, not only as an accomplished pianist and teacher, but also gave evidence in the recital of unusual ability as an organizer of children and constructor of programs.

40 YEARS AGO…

The Kids of the Kingdom, a youth choir composed of youngsters from several local churches, presented “A Certain Small Shepherd,” a Christmas musical, before a large appreciative crowd at Community Bank and Trust.

Elihue Wilburn was reelected president of the Rockdale chapter of the NAACP as that organization met in the Aycock Center. Wilburn would be serving his third term as president.

20 YEARS AGO…

Three-story Arledge Antiques and two-story Ballard Carpets burned and collapsed in a downtown fire that ranked among the worst in Rockdale’s history. Firefighters were optimistic that the rest of the 100 block of East Cameron Avenue, which included Citizens National Bank, could be saved.

One of Rockdale’s favorite citizens was feted at Peace Lutheran Church fellowship hall with a birthday party marking her 90 years. Margaret Lengert, a longtime school teacher, was honored by about 100 people.

10 YEARS AGO…

Relatives and friends of a 49-year-old Rockdale native were in shock this week after he was fatally shot by an Abilene police detective during a raid on a gold exchange business in that city. Marcus Cass died at Abilene Gold Exchange, which he managed for Charles Hardin Camp, another Milam County native.

Rockdale ISD administrators and campus officials were reviewing and evaluating their school security procedures in light of a previously unimaginable horror, the wanton massacre of 20 children and six adult educators in an American elementary school. “It was an emotional day for all of us,” Supt. Dr. Howell Wright Jr. told The Reporter after talking to administrators and educators in the wake of shootings in Newtown, Connecticut. “The campus principals, administrators and I conducted a thorough review of our security system. We got more ‘thank yous’ than we could count,” he said.
