100 YEARS AGO....
It was Milano’s turn to vote on a road improvement bond issue. Milano-area residents petition was accepted and Milam County Commissioners called for a $150,000 election on Nov. 22 which would results in 60-70 miles of “good roads” in the Milano administrative district.
Dr. L. L. Lee of Thorn-dale had a new, “specially designed” Ford car to be used exclusively in his medical practice. Dr. Lee’s car was delivered from Rockdale—despite wet and washed-out roads—by Will Vogel and Branch Lewis.
N. J. Bagby of the Standard Medical Society of Baltimore was in Rockdale selling “Our Standard Remedy” which he said would prevent the Spanish Flu and cure appendicitis along with numerous other diseases.
Rice & Wynden of Bastrop was awarded the contract to construct 25 miles of roads in the Rockdale area.
FORTY YEARS AGO....
Rockdale High School Big Blue Band members had begun raising funds for a trip to an international music festival in Mexico City in May, 1930.
The fourth Rockdale Fair unreeled with a crowd of 4,000 for Saturday evening and afternoon activities and a $38,000 youth livestock sale.
Rockdale joined the growing list of towns and cities with a Walmart as grand opening ceremonies were scheduled on the site of what was once the town’s drive-in theater.
After an up-and-down pre-district schedule, the Rockdale Tigers made a statement in the district opening game, defeating Hearne 28-12 behind two TD runs by Kim Locklin.
TWENTY YEARS AGO....
The Rockdale Fair Youth Livestock sale went over the $100,000 plateau for the fifth consecutive year. For the first time the Fair Children’s Pageant was moved from an outdoor tent into the Patterson Civic Center.
After a meeting between the city and the library board, members of both organizations said the effort to expand the library into the adjacent Vogel Building was “back on the same page” after some funding differences.
Blade Bassler kicked four field goals, an extra point and scored a running touchdown as Big Blue remained atop District 19AAA with a 25-6 victory over Manor.
Thorndale defeated Thrall 43-20 and was set to tangle with another district foe. Hutto. Yes, Hutto, it was 1989, population in the north Austin Metro area had not yet exploded and Hut-to was in a 2A district with Thorndale and Thrall.
TEN YEARS AGO....
Despite the completion of Alcoa’s smelter the Rockdale area business community continued to support area 4-H and FFA youngsters as the 1999 youth livestock auction netted $189,934.
Bids on an expansion project at the RHS Baseball Diamond came in twice the amount anticipated. A re-design of the project was proposed.
While assisting on the search for a serial rapist, who had been committing crimes in southern Bell and Falls Counties, the Milam County Sheriff’s Department made two drug arrests.
Contractors cleaning out a notorious logjam on the Little River on the FM 1915 bridge were finding not only logs but junk, including the frame from an old car.
