100 YEARS AGO....

Miriam Loewenstein, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Loewenstein J r., fell from a tree and badly broke her arm. Dr. Eduard Rischar of Cameron said the injury one of the most “complicated and troublesome” fractures he had ever treated and was worried the child might have a stiff arm for the remainder of her life.

Fire destroyed the Evergreen Commissary at the Rockdale Consolidated Coal Co. The building did not have insurance.

Rockdale joined Milam County and the state in approving a constitutional amendment enabling Galveston to construct a seawall. The memory of the devastating Galveston Hurricane of 1900 was still fresh in the minds of coastal Texans.

H. E. Graham of Gause had become one of Central Texas’ major honey producers, with 1,300 stands and 35 apiaries. He had sold $12,000 worth of honey an 4,000 queen bees.

FORTY YEARS AGO....

Two Gause women were dead and a two-year-old girl was in critical condition in a Temple hospital. The man named as the suspect in the shootings was also in critical condition with a self-in-Úicted head wound.

Grappling with bids that came in much higher than expected, the city council and Rockdale Civic Center board were disagreeing over the structure’s site. The board said it preferred to use available money to renovate the former Rockdale State Bank Building downtown, while the council opted for a scaled-down civic center at the original site selected, across the street from Fair Park.

The Curtain Callers, Rock-dale High School drama club, presented “Dracula Darling,” a Halloween-themed mystery-comedy, directed by Stephanie Reeves.

Cameron rode two big plays and a solid defense to a 14-0 upset of Rockdale in the annual Battle of the Bell to hand i lue its first district loss.

TWENTY YEARS AGO....

The Texas Dept. of Transportation’s US 70 renovation program in downtown Rockdale may have been over but several Rock-dale business owners were expressing concern over what they perceived as drainage problems.

Milam County Commissioners were told a new jail might be needed to solve the county’s problems with a current jail which had failed its state inspection earlier in the year.

The Lucy Hill Patterson Library’s expansion fund was at $167,000, en route to a $200,000 goal.

The Rockdale Tigers punched their post-season ticket, and the Hearne Eagles, with a 42-7 rout on the road.

Rockdale police were confronting a rash of “stuff and run” crimes in which thieves would grab merchandise, stuff it in an article of clothin and ee from the store, occasionally with a store employee in pursuit.

Luminant announced an outage at its Sandow 5 plant during which the company would attempt to deal with noise vibration problems.

Twelve headstones were toppled in an unfunny Halloween night prank at the Detmold Cemetery near Thorndale.

Rockdale had an idle week on the next-to-last weekend of the regular season, giving Big Blue some extra time to prepare for old rival Taylor in a game that, if won, would hand the Tigers a playoff spot.
