100 YEARS AGO....
The hastily arranged baseball game between a group of Rockdale volunteers and the Army 37th Infantry team apparently didn’t go so well for the local lads. The Reporter noted the teams “went through the motions of playing a game” and reported the final score as “one for Rockdale and several more for the soldiers.”
A meeting was set to reorganize the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce with The Reporter pleading: “Let us get together and stay together...Let us put aside our petty jealousies, put our shoulders to the wheel of progress and put Rockdale on the map.”
First result from the Milam County tick eradication program showed 2,742 head dipped with 12 percent showing ticks.
A fire in the Coffield & Hale wood storage yard consumed between 250 and 600 cords of wood.
FORTY YEARS AGO....
Shell Oil Company was reportedly “close” to a deal with a power company venture to use its 25,000-acreplus Milam County lignite holdings and bring hundreds of jobs to the county.
Charlie Martin, who for the past three years had served as Milano mayor, Milano ISD superintendent and MHS boys basketball coach, was stepping down as mayor. Martin had retired from coaching earlier in the year.
Angela White, Rockdale High School senior, broke both the girls shot put and discus records, breaking her own record in the shot. (They still stand.)
Lew Simmonds’ Tiger track team rolled up 203 points to easily win the Rocket Relays at Robinson High School. That won the meet by 60 points.
TWENTY YEARS AGO....
An “in progress” open house at the I&GN Railroad Depot was scheduled by the Rockdale Historical Society. The 95-year-old building was being restored as a museum by volunteers.
Milano ISD trustees had narrowed their search for a new superintendent to three finalists. Former Supt. Don Hafley had retired in 1989.
The Texas Dept. of Transportation had scheduled a public hearing to discuss a project to widen US 79 between Rockdale and Milano for the Milano Civic Center.
Rockdale Tiger baseballers took a 7-3 lead against Cameron into the bottom of the seventh inning only to see the Yoemen rally for five runs and a walkoff win.
TEN YEARS AGO....
After being listed on a “Dirty Kilowatts” list by an environmental action group, Luminant vowed to continue reducing mercury emissions at Sandow Power Plant Unit 4.
A rural Milam County couple appeared before commissioners to report their address had been left off the new county 911 map.
Dr. Kathleen Gilmore, the noted archaeologist whose work included the 18th Century San Gabriel area missions of Milam County, died at the age of 95.
Pitcher Brandon Gibbs didn’t allow an earned run and fanned six as Rockdale defeated Caldwell 4-3 to claim sole possession of first place in the District 24AAA baseball standings.
