100 YEARS AGO....
A violent storm blew through San Gabriel, knocking the San Gabriel Christian Church off its piers, unroofing the Hope Gym and causing extensive damage throughout the community.
Burglaries on two consecutive nights at the J. O. Newton Store in Milano netted eight men’s suits, several bolts of silk, suitcases and shoes.
W. O. Newton, acting for Milano Road District No. 29, said it appeared due to higher gravel prices, there would not be enough bond money to “gravel or Macadam roads in the road district.”
Roy Long, owner of the Dixie Theater, said he had trusted his new “windmill suction fan” and promised “there won’t be any complaints of summer heat in this theater.”
FORTY YEARS AGO....
The new 65,375-squarefoot Rockdale Junior-High School was taking shape on Old Bushdale Road. Contractors were racing an Aug. 26 deadline to have the facility ready for occupancy.
Texas Green Thumb Inc., an organization composed of older workers, announced its next Rockdale project would be to resurface the floor of the Aycock Gym.
Lew Simmonds’ unstoppable Rockdale Tiger track team continues its blitz through the season, rolling up 163 points to easily win the Rosebud-Lott Relays, a meet which featured four of its District 23AA opponents.
Many school tracks were switching from yards to meters, leaving record keepers with the task of determining equivalent times to break existing records.
TWENTY YEARS AGO....
Rockdale ISD trustees okayed a 2000-2001 school calendar with the first day of classes set at Aug. 10, the earliest starting day in Rockdale ISD history.
An open house at the old International & Great Northern (I&GN) train depot drew a large crowd. The Rockdale Historical Society was planning to remodel the 1906 depot into a museum.
About 90 persons came to the junior-high commons for a seminar on gangs, presented by Ray Brown of the Austin Police Department.
James Menze, a Rockdale ISD teacher assigned to the Roger Hashem Juvenile Justice Center, won the prestigious Capitol 10K in Austin.
TEN YEARS AGO....
As Reporter archives reached—what turned out to be more or less—100 consecutive years the paper revised its popular “10-20- 40” history column to “10- 20-40-100.
There were 425 temporary workers on site for a routine maintenance project at Luminant’s Sandow Power Plant Unit 5.
New Milam County Treasurer Linda Acosta and Auditor Danica Lara were sworn into office.
After one round in the District 24-3A golf tourney Rockdale had a ninestroke lead over Caldwell. Kirk Williams led Big Blue with a 76.
