100 YEARS AGO....

Gay Hill rancher Calvin Eiland was acquitted on a charge of failing to dip his cattle as per county order. Justice of the Peace Ed Gunn said 500 persons attended the trial, the largest trial crowd in his memory. Eight more cases were scheduled for trial.

Sullivan Turner Jr., 29, a Rockdale native, died in a North Texas oilfield accident when a traveling block caught him on a derrick and knocked him 35 feet to the ground. Turner died while being rushed to a Wichita Falls hospital.

The Rockdale Chamber of Commerce published a “wish” list of businesses it would like to see open in town, including an ice cream plant, flour mill and mattress factory.

The Rockdale School Board re-hired the entire high school faculty as follows: E. S. Guest, Mary Catherine Hall, Emma Jean Lockwood, Elizabeth Lockwood.

FORTY YEARS AGO....

Bill Ortego of Port Arthur was named the new Rockdale High School principal, replacing Dr. Bob Reynolds who had resigned effective June 20.

The Rockdale Community Players production of “Never Too Late,” was a smash hit in a dinner theater presentation at Vada’s Kountry Inn. Playing the leads were Collie Parker and Frank Summers.

A target date of May 19 was set for construction to begin paving a portion of Old Bushdale Road which was to serve the new juniorhigh school then under construction.

Bringing down the curtain on the highest-scoring season in RHS track history, Lew Simmonds’ Tigers totaled 193-1/2 points to win the 23AA meet and raise the season total to 1,075-1/2.

TWENTY YEARS AGO....

Rockdale Hospital District voters were going to be asked whether to give the district the authority to levy a property tax of up to 50 cents in an attempt to keep Richards Memorial Hospital open.

Rockdale ISD trustees approved the low bid of Perry & Perry Builders for the long-awaited project to air condition the high school gym.

There were no injuries but traffic was a mess when two 18-wheelers collided on the ramp connecting US 77 and US 79 at the eastern city limits.

Led by pitcher Ginger Owen, the Rockdale Lady Tigers edged Giddings 6-5 to win a bi-district softball championship.

TEN YEARS AGO....

Blackhawk Health Care met with the Rockdale Hospital District board and noted a new clinic, rather than a new hospital, might be in the works for the community.

The 11th annual Dewberry Jam Run raised $7,000 for Alpha Tau Delta’s ongoing efforts to spruce-up local parks.

Several agencies, including the Milam County Sheriff’s Department and DPS were searching for a Corpus Christi-area fugitive who was believed to have spent the night in a Cameron motel.

Rockdale High School had its first-ever boys golf state qualifying team. Golfers were Patrick David, Kirk Williams,Waylon Boyd, Lance Loewe and Tyler Wright. Coach was Earl Gandy.
