100 YEARS AGO....
Mrs. B.A. Kirkpatrick, wife of Dr. B.A. Kirkpatrick of Thrall, was killed and her husband and son seriously injured when their auto was struck by a Dallas city streetcar.
Dr. T. E. Crump of Lee County was moving his practice to Rockdale and had leased space over the Perry & Quebe Drug Store.
Severe weather roared through North Milam County. A tornado demolished several homes in Marak and the Jones Prairie School burned to the ground after it was struck by lightning.
C. Weign Rogers, secretary of the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce, wrote lengthy articles on The Reporter’s front page, one addressing the business community and one to farmers. One was so long it had to be continued until the next week. In that article, Rogers apologized for being so busy during the week he “couldn’t find time to write a complete article.”
FORTY YEARS AGO....
Three persons died and one was seriously injured in a head-on crash between an auto and pickup truck on US 77 near Rockdale.
The Rockdale City Council voted to borrow $140,000 to issue time warrants for its share of a joint project, with the Rockdale ISD, to pave Old Bushdale Road, the only street serving the new junior-high, set to open in the fall.
Rockdale ISD was calling for bids on a bus barn. Assistant Supt. Gilbert Bernstein said the district did not have a facility to maintain buses and was using the rural home of a district employee for those tasks.
Knights of Columbus Council 7014 held the grand opening of its new KC Hall with festivities including a day-long barbecue, auction and dance.
TWENTY YEARS AGO....
Alcoa’s Rockdale Works energized a formerly offline potline, marking the first time in seven years for the smelter to run at six lines.
A spring thunderstorm rumbled through Rockdale, dropping a half-inch of rain, toppling trees and shattering plate-glass windows at three businesses.
Police were advised of two Thorndale man “dueling pickups”—drivers repeatedly running into each other.
Gary Jack began his duties as new head football coach at Thorndale High School. Jack replaced Don Rives who led Thorndale to a bi-district title in 1999.
TEN YEARS AGO....
The Alcoa v. Luminant trial in 20th District Court was headed to the jury. Alcoa was seeking a half-billion dollars in damages, claiming Luminant failed to honor power contracts.
“Extra inning” talks, after the contract deadline expired, produced a new contract proposal between Alcoa and United Steelworkers. Union members nationwide were set to vote on the four-year contract.
Gause ISD officials had scheduled a meeting to gauge public support for adding grades 7-12.
Caleb Saunders of Thorndale started both games of a lose-one-and-go-home double header as the Bulldogs won a regional semifinal Class A baseball title.
