100 YEARS AGO....

Big Elk Refining Co. of Cameron and Oklahoma announced it would build a refinery in Milano if the people of that town would donate 40 acres for the project.

The Fair Park diamond was set to host a baseball game of Rockdale businessman. Teams were called the Fats (captained by Dr. H. T. Coulter) and Leans (captained by B. Ashby). The Reporter: “plenty of allowance has been made for injuries and ambulance drivers.”

The Ice Palace. That was the name of Rockdale’s new ice cream parlor. It was the former Alcove. Myra McDaniel suggested the winning name and won a five-pound box of chocolates.

Reporter Publisher John Esten Cooke was elected president of the Texas Press Association at its annual convention, held in Houston.

FORTY YEARS AGO....

Two Pflugerville residents were arrested and charged with posing as members of the news media to “case” rural residents’ homes, returning to steal thousands of dollars worth of items.

A new drainage system was going in on Murray Avenue to handle drainage from Bushdale Road which was to be paved in advance of opening the new juniorhigh school.

The Rockdale Chamber of Commerce hired a Sam Houston State University student to conduct a threemonth research analysis study with an eye toward industrial development.

Bill Spencer, former Lexington High School football and basketball coach, was returning as the new Lexington ISD head football coach and athletic director.

TWENTY YEARS AGO....

After receiving input from students, Rockdale ISD trustees adopted a new dress code at RHS and RJH.

Dr. Monica Criswell, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, told school trustees that TAAS scores from students incarcerated at the Roger Hashem Juvenile Justice Center were not negatively impacting Rockdale ISD scores as a whole which had been feared.

Workers were out in force relocating electrical poles along US 79 in Rockdale, in preparation for a highway widening project.

It was the same old story in Texas Football magazine’s annual forecast of District 18AAA’s upcoming football season. The magazine picked Cameron No. 1 and Rockdale No. 2.

TEN YEARS AGO....

Police were expressing concern that new regulations concerning the 911 emergency system could route all such calls in the county through Cameron instead of having Rockdale-area calls answered at the Rockdale Police Department.

Claude Hendrickson, owner of Dixie Contractors—the company dismantling the three older power units at Alcoa’s Rockdale Operations—bought a fire truck and donated it to the Milano VFD.

A 13-month-old Cameron girl was in serious condition after she was accidentally run over by her father.

Rockdale’s Derek David, an “ultra-blue chipper” in the recruiting class, gave a verbal commitment to attend Texas Tech University.
