100 YEARS AGO....

Pat Neff routed Joe Bailey in the hotly-contested Democratic Gubernatorial Primary. Neff carried Milam County 2,018-868 and swamped Baily in Rockdale 204-74.

The Rockdale Chamber of Commerce reported people were starting to lose interest in the organization since its secretary resigned in July. An unnamed member of the Chamber board was quoted as saying the former employee was “peculiarly and unfortunately unqualified for the position.”

The Milano School was set to open Sept. 13. Howard Marshall was president and teachers were Clara Hammon and Glen Stafford. There was one teaching vacancy.

FORTY YEARS AGO....

Alcoa’s Rockdale Operations was set to resume full production with the announcement that a potline, idled July 13, was heading back into production in October.

Rockdale City Council members had called a special session to deal with drainage problems which emerged after opening of the new junior-high earlier in the month.

A crowd of 150 brought a clear message to the new county tax appraisal district board in the Milam County Courthouse. They feel appraisals were too high, as were salaries for employees of the district.

The city council nixed a request from the city’s cable television company to increase rates to $8.50 a month.

TWENTY YEARS AGO....

Budget and tax rate adoption were put on hold for the Rockdale Hospital District after a board member told administrators: “I’m more confused now than I was a month ago.”

Law enforcement personnel were on the lookout for a shotgun-wielding robber who held up Milano Truck Plaza.

It was the hottest week in Rockdale history as the town recorded a high of 113. Other highs during the week included 112 and a pair of 111’s.

Chad Lagrone’s Milano Eagles opened the 2000 season with a 26-0 rout over Normangee, Milano’s 11th consecutive regular-season victory.

TEN YEARS AGO....

A “Nocturnal Music Fest” at Apache Pass drew the two largest crowds in Milam County history, an estimated 25,000 over two nights.
