FORTY YEARS AGO...
A 34-year-old Brenham man was convicted of the rape of child in June near Rockdale.
Garland R. Bullock, 55, a six-grade teacher at Milano Junior High for two years and a former principal at Waco High School, was named new superintendent of the Milano School District. Bullock was picked from a field of six candidates by the district’s board of trustees.
The 1980-81 budget for the Milam County Tax Appraisal District was sliced another $17,040 to $133,955 and more cuts were being considered, according to Carroll Glaser Appraisal District board chairman, but many Milam citizens continue to voice opposition to new tax values. Recent discussion centered on reappraisals of property which increased accessed property values in the county from around $300 million to $784 million.
The Rockdale City Council approved a one-dollar-per-month rate increase for Rockdale Cablevision and restructured the Airport Board during a special meeting at City Hall.
TWENTY YEARS AGO...
A 39-year-old drifter was in a Georgetown jail before he was transported to Milam County to face armed robbery charges in connection with holdups of Thorndale and Milano convenient stores. With still a month to go before the Nov. 2 general election, the race for Milam County Judge was generating the most expenditures and the most donations. That race pitted incumbent Frank Summers, a Democrat, against Republican Dave Barkemeyer.
