100 YEARS AGO...
Every moment from 7:40 to 10:10 p.m. spent by the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors in session was full of action or constructive discussion which resulted in action or will result in action. With Vice-President Roundtree in the chair in the absence of President Camp who was unavoidably detained, things went off with acceleration; members “snapped to it” as our soldier boys have taught many of us older ones to do, and speed and decision increased as the evening waned.
Many Milam County citizens were taking their annual two weeks vacation this month down in the Rio Grande Valley with the deer and wolf tribe. All report good sources with deer especially plentiful and a good many wolves.
The Rockdale Public Schools will dismiss for the Christmas holidays. School were to re-convene on Jan. 3.
FORTY YEARS AGO...
Students in the Rockdale School District were to get out early Friday for the Christmas holidays.
Lexington school trustees Thursday heard Supt. A.P. Kleinschmidt report last week work was continuing on a new type of teacher contract for the district and that a ruling had been obtained concerning the privacy of personnel files.
Six local homes were toured Sunday by 250 people from Rockdale, Thorndale, Taylor, Giddings, Lexington, Milano and Austin.
Trailing for most of the game, Coach Jerry Franklin’s Rockdale Tigers overtook Georgetown in the last minute of play, claiming a 54-51 win and the championship of the 25th annual RHS Boys Invitational Tournament.
TWENTY YEARS AGO...
Charges were dropped against a 58-year-old Cameron man who had been arrested in connection with grand jury indictments for sexual assault of a child and indecency.
Rockdale City Council members met and approved a “new and improved” contract with waste management.
Just over 50 Milam County residents gathered in the Milano Civic Center to discuss underground water in an informational meeting that both answered questions but raised more.
A number of Rockdale Elementary students asked Santa for snow day vacation in their letters to him. On Monday a transformer failed triggering a power failure that sent the children home from school early almost getting their wish.
TEN YEARS AGO...
Rockdale’s Municipal Development District (MDD) wanted the town’s economy to keep on truckin’. Literally. A truck stop for Rockdale was ranked No. 1 on a list of projects presented by the MDD board.
Christmas cheer organizations—mostly the giant Christmas Roundup effort—made the holiday season brighter for a staggering 1,500 persons.
A first-year assistant football coach at Rockdale High School resigned as the result of criminal charges filed alleging an improper relationship with a female student.
Velocita wasn’t bringing 5,000 jobs and a “green” community development to Rockdale after all. Doug Hutchison, Velocita CEO, told a small, disappointed group of civic, business and school leaders at the Chamber of Commerce the company was unable to reach a deal with Alcoa to purchase 11,000 acres at the former Rockdale operations.
