100 YEARS AGO....

Big news in The Reporter, and everywhere else, of course: “Germany Has Surrendered Unconditionally” marked the end of World War I. The surrender was signed on 5 a.m. Nov. 11 and went into effect at 11 a.m., French time.

Rockdale celebrated. Hundreds of people gathered at the city flagpole, the City Hall fire bell and church bells rang out, the Rockdale VFD’s main pumper made trips through town, siren blaring. There was a celebration with speeches by attorney E. A. Camp, Mayor H. C. Meyer and Principal B. Y. Aycock.

Forest Grove Woodmen of the World :Lodge announced it would hold a “funeral” for Kaiser Wilhelm II. No details were announced save one. Instead of releasing a dove the lodge planned to release “the ugliest old buzzard we can find.”

With the joy came sadness. Mrs. W. P. Carlyle of Hamilton Chapel received word that her sons, James and Hicks, had died in combat on the same day (Oct.

9) in the same battle. Rock-dale’s American Legion Post is named for the Carlyles.

FORTY YEARS AGO....

A 30-unit rental complex for local senior citizens was assured when the Farmers Home Administration announced the Rockdale Housing Authority had been approved for a $532,500 loan.

State Rep Dan Kubiak (D-Rockdale) coasted to an easy re-election win over Republican Jack Smith by a 14,465 to 5,509 margin.

Roxanne Hromcik, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Hromcik, was crowned 1978 RHS Homecoming Queen. Making the presentation was Supt. Walter Vincent.

The No 1-ranked Cameron Yoemen held off Rock-dale 24-20 thanks to a fourth-quarter comeback by the Yoemen.

TWENTY YEARS AGO....

Republican Charles Jones defeated Democrat Teddy Boehm to succeed the late Dan Kubiak (D-Rock-dale) who had passed away in August.

In a 6-0 vote, the Rock-dale City Council endorsed plans by the Texas Dept.of Transportation to construct a US 79 loop around the city.

A Rockdale resident was hospitalized after he was attacked at his home by an assailant wielding an ax handle.

La Toya Wells was crowned 1998 homecoming queen. She was escorted by her mother, Genell Dixon. Making the presentation was RHS Principal Raymon Puente.

TEN YEARS AGO....

Democrat Barack Obama was elected president. Milam County voted heavily for Republican John McCain, who polled 62 percent of the vote.

State officials were saying the demise of the Texas Transportation Corridor made it more likely funding would be found in the TxDOT budget for a proposed, but never built, US 79 loop around Rockdale.

Rockdale ISD trustees were mulling an Alcoa-less future and trying to plan for enrollment drop. The Alcoa smelter was shutting down after 56 years of making aluminum in the RISD.

Rockdale and Taylor were set to renew their rivalry at Tiger Field with playoff implications on the line. Jeff Miller’s 7-2 Tigers could punch their post-season ticket with a win over the Ducks.
