100 YEARS AGO...
In order to supply reliable information to several oil operating firms who had become actively interested in the Rockdale-Tracy oil field, also in the Rockdale-Minerva field, and in the Rockdale field which includes all area south of San Gabriel River and west and south of town, the executive secretary of the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce secured what appeared to be reliable information as to the yield of wells in th Rockdale-Tracy field.
Mr. G.A. Martin was seriously hurt on a section workman’s motor car. The workmen were trying to get to the section house ahead of a train which they saw coming and they were running the car at a very high speed when one of the brakes broke and the car could not be stopped quickly. Mr. Martin was tripped while trying to help stop the car and he fell off, the supposition being that a shovel flew up and knocked him off. As a result, he was badly bruised up, especially about the face and when he struck the ground was knocked unconscious.
FORTY YEARS AGO...
Teachers in the Rockdale Independent School District could expect a $1,000 increase in teaching supplements, according to district administrators.
An estimated 500 citizens assembled in the Rockdale Junior High School commons for a 2-1/2 meeting with school trustees and administrators to voice opinions about the administration and controversy over the Jan. 29 reassignment of coach and athletic director Fred Johnson. The meeting revealed that budget considerations were not the primary reason for Johnson’s reassignment and a trustee stated that “Johnson didn’t get along with the administration.”
School trustees accepted the resignation of Rockdale football coach Fred Johnson and adopted a timetable to hire a new coach, possibly as soon as March 9.
A fund-raising kickoff for the new Senior Citizen Center was to be held at the Ackerman Street Center, according to Denise Doss, center staffer.
TWENTY YEARS AGO...
It appeared Rockdale residents who could be subject to a half-cent property tax from a watershed district would get a chance locally to vote on the proposal.
One incumbent was among three candidates filing for the Rockdale Independent School District board on the first day to file for the May 5 school and city elections.
Ken Cockrell’s only previous experience with overtime may have been the basketball games he attended while a student at Rockdale High School in 1967-68. But the space shuttle commander of Atlantis went through two “overtimes” early this week before landing in California. Bad weather forced the delayed landing.
It’s official. The Texas Legislature was considering a bill that would create a water conservation district for Milam and Burleson counties.
TEN YEARS AGO...
For the first time since the initial International & Great Northern passenger train chugged into town in 1873, Rockdale was Milam County’s largest town. U.S. Census Bureau figures showed Rockdale with a population of 5,595, just 43 more than Cameron’s 5,552. During the past year, Rockdale grew 2.9 percent from its 2000 Census figure of 5,439. Cameron declined 1.5 percent from its 2000 level, 5,634.
If you drove through Rockdale during the past 11 years, got a traffic ticket and blew it off, better reconsider. You could see Rockdale and Milam County again, this time from a courtroom or even a jail cell. Rockdale police were joining a statewide effort to crack down on unpaid traffic warrants by March 5, a day when the fifth annual Great Texas Warrant Roundup would kick off.
Rockdale ISD trustees rehired six administrators. Thety were: Athletic Director/Head Football Coach Jeff Miller, two-year term contract; Elementary Assistant Principal Gena Helton, two-year term contact; Chief Financial Officer Marla Wallace, two-year non-certified contract; RHS Principal Joey Geletka, oneyear probationary contract; RHS Assistant Principal Brent Hasselbach, one-year probationary contract.
