100 YEARS AGO...

Miss Fannie Arthur, staying at the home of Mr. and Mrs. E.F. Ousley, was awaken by the presence of someone in her room. She got out of bed to turn on the light and ran against a man who seized her arm. She screamed and struggled, but the man threw her roughly to one side and dashed from the room. Miss Arthur fell over the stove and received slight bruises. Tracks were found under the window with indications that the party had seated himself under the edge of the house for a time. There was no clue as to who the party was.

The annual membership meeting of the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce was held and celebrated with a barbecue, accompanied by band music.

The Reporter learned of the contemplated removal from the city of Frank Young and family. Young resigned as buyer and manager of the Dry Goods Department of Scarbrough & Hicks Co., effective April 1, and would leave for Eagle Pass where he was to assume the management of a large dry goods department store.

FORTY YEARS AGO...

City Council members awarded a bid on the final—and major—project of a $975,000 revenue bond issue passed in 1979, a project designed to replace some 35,000 linear feet of water mains throughout Rockdale over the next eight to 12 months.

Herschl “Tootie” Roach, 46, was the new head coach and athletic director at Rockdale High School. Roach, formerly an assistant varsity football coach at 4A Paris High School, was hired by a unanimous vote of the RISD trustees.

Milam County peace officers broke up a cock fighting ring near Davilla and charged 10 people with a variety of offenses ranging from assault on a peace officer to cruelty to animals.

Auditions for the Rockdale Noon Lions Club Talent Show were scheduled for March 17, show chairman David Pendleton said.

TWENTY YEARS AGO...

Rockdale and western Milam County residents may not face a controversial May 5 election on a maintenance tax for 22 earthen dams in the Austin metro area after all. One proposal left Milam County out of the plan.

There were no new filings for local offices in Rockdale.

The Texas Railroad Commission’s decision on Neighbors for Neighbors’ petition to deny Alcoa’s 3 Oaks Mine in Bastrop and Lee counties was “no decision.” Commissioners voted to delay action until March 20.

Carson & Barnes Circus was set to bring its five-ring big top to Rockdale after a three-year hiatus on March 30 at Fair Park. The event was sponsored by the Rockdale Rotary Club.

TEN YEARS AGO...

Rockdale’s “warrant roundup” of outstanding municipal court cases this spring turned out to be more a stampede than a roundup. Through Saturday, the official state “roundup day” in Texas, Rockdale Municipal Court had collected over $40,000 and cleaned 216 cases from the city books, according to Municipal Court Judge Jerry Waggoner.

The filing deadline for the May 14 city and school elections was approaching and there were still no contested races in Rockdale.

They helped hundreds of Rockdale area residents find jobs and now they had to sweat out some maneuvering at the highest levels of the federal government to see if they still had their own. Rockdale’s Workforce Solutions of Central Texas—called the “best rural workforce operations in Texas” by its regional director—got a reprieve of sorts last weekend when the U.S. Senate okayed a spending bill with $6.5 billion in budget cuts.

Spring break was March 14-18 in the Rockdale, Milano, Thorndale and Gause ISDs. Schools and most offices would be closed.
