100 YEARS AGO...

A very interesting visitor to the executive office of the Chamber of Commerce was D.E. Woods, chief deputy supervisor of the Oil and Gas Division of the Texas Railroad Commission, who was sent on a special mission to survey the Rockdale-Tracy, Rockdale-Minerva and Rockdale proper oil fields, check up on developments under way and report officially to the Oil and Gas Division office.

The situation in regard to watermelons was not “blowed up” notwithstanding the unfounded reports which may have circulated.

Probably the heaviest wind that had blown in Rockdale since the famous August gale several years ago blew for several hours between midnight and daylight Tuesday morning. Some rain came with it, though not much.

Mr. and Mrs. Bun Norman of San Gabriel were Rockdale shoppers.

FORTY YEARS AGO...

The Rockdale branch of the NAACP asked the Federal Bureau of Investigation to look into the death of a 30-year-old black man who died in his cell in the city jail after being arrested in a scuffle at the home of his ex-wife.

The Rockdale City Council had taken the first step toward acquiring a $450,000 airport with a 4,500-foot runway, instrument approach system, terminal building and hangars.

The Rockdale School District received high marks from the accreditation visit by a three-person team from the Texas Education Agency.

An Arlington man was apprehended near Thorndale after a high-speed auto chase through three counties which hit 80 mph through the Rockdale city limits, according to Milam County Sheriff Leroy Broadus.

TWENTY YEARS AGO...

Milam County government had a bad smell Monday. That’s not an editorial opinion. That is a statement of fact. Just ask County Clerk LaVerne Soefje or any of several dozen county employees working in offices across Main Street from the courthouse. Odor from two skunks apparently living in crawlspace under the block of buildings, became so bad that the county and district clerk offices temporarily relocated for the rest of the day.

Individuals, organizations and businesses were out in force along US 79 in Rockdale to participate in the “Don’t Mess with Texas” cleanup campaign.

After appearing to be headed toward a compromise with a street contractor, City Council members decided they may force the contractor to fix improperly built streets after hearing from a local resident.

Foggy, rainy conditions were blamed for several highway accidents around Rockdale over the past weekend.

TEN YEARS AGO...

HB 1, the school finance bill which cleared the Texas House of Representatives, would have “devastating” consequences for the Rockdale ISD, according to Supt. Dr. Howell Wright. The House version would slice about $2.7 million from state funding headed for Rockdale ISD over the next two years, Dr. Wright said.

Kathy Pelzel, an employee of the Rockdale ISD technology department for the past 10 years, was named new principal of Rockdale Intermediate School by trustees.

Milano city officials met with Buckholts’ mayor and police chief last week to discuss Milano’s quest for a first-ever police department. Buckholts established its one-man police department last fall and was seeing positive feedback in the town in less vandalism and burglaries, Mayor Hal Senkel and Police Chief James Blackmon told Milano council members.

Rockdale’s MARC Center needed a big turnout to raise money for its recent expansion and more than 100 motorcycle enthusiasts provided just that.
