100 YEARS AGO...
A school carnival was set to be held on the third Friday in May, at the high school campus by the students of the Primary and Intermediate Departments, at which the Queen of May would be crowned.
The Commissioners Court of Milam County heard a delegation of citizens interested in the construction of the much talked about bridge over the Brazos River near Gause. The court appropriated $15,000 as Milam County’s part of the fund, represented as being necessary for the purpose.
It was announced at the Chamber of Commerce meeting that the Chaurauqua which some citizens had signed up for would be here for the week of June 4-8.
The wisdom of acquiring Fair Park by the City had been questioned on several occasions. Mayor Meyer said it was one of the greatest assets the city has. With all other pleasure or picnic grounds disappearing by being converted to agriculture or industrial purposes, it would only be a few years until such parks as ours would be few and far between.
FORTY YEARS AGO...
Some 300 representatives of the Rockdale business community turned out to welcome Shell Oil and Texland Electric Power Cooperative officials to Rockdale.
Ralph Wilson Plastics Company awarded ten $1,000 scholarships to Central Texas high school students on April 24 at a banquet at the Ponderosa in Temple.
Rockdale Volunteer firemen used their “Jaws of Life” device to removed the body of a La Grange woman, victim of an auto accident near Lexington.
A Cameron resident was free on $20,000 bond and a resident of West Germany was being held in Milam County jail in lieu of that amount after they were arrested in connection with a package of marijuana mailed to a Cameron residence.
TWENTY YEARS AGO...
Folks were looking for a full day of fun on Saturday when the first Milam County Dewberry Festival was set to get under way with a 5K Fun Run/Walk.
A truck driver hauling eggs and produce died when his 18-wheeler collided with a cow on US 77 just north of Lexington.
Delmon Cude, 24, lifted part of a one-ton farm tractor off his 71-year-old father at their home on CR 331 south of Milano. Zettler Cude escaped with only minor injuries.
Seven members of James Saegert’s district champion Tiger track team were set to compete in the Region III-3A track meet at Turner Stadium in Humble.
TEN YEARS AGO...
A 50-year-old San Gabriel area woman was killed by two shotgun blasts at her home and two Rockdale area teens were charged with capital murder. Sheriff David Greene said Sandra “Sandy” Phillips died during a home invasion in the 7300 block of FM 486 when she was hit twice in the chest with blasts from a .12-gauge shotgun. Greene said the incident appeared to have occurred during a “home invasion.” Arrested within hours were 18-year-old Tanner Aaron Baker of Caldwell and Brandon Charles Cotton, 19, of Rockdale.
Rockdale City Council members discussed an all-encompassing nuisance ordinance in a workshop session that included an earful of input from a council visitor. “It’s going to be a nuisance to live in Rockdale,” Realtor Judith Matula told the council. “We have enough laws. You can’t write an ordinance to cover every single situation.”
A musical event which drew one of the largest crowds in Milam County history last September was returning to Apache Pass. Nocturnal Fest was set to unreel at the venue on the San Gabriel River, eight miles northwest of Rockdale on FM 908.
