100 YEARS AGO...

Trade Day was held every second Monday in Rockdale, where provisions were made for the sale, exchange or barter of any article farmers had to dispose of.

Rockdale Public School term was to closed May 27, with commencement exercises following May 27 and 31.

A “school carnival” to be given by the primary and intermediate departments of Rockdale Public School was set to take place on the high school campus on May 23.

The store of Mrs. J.C. Wuensche was entered and a quantity of jewelry, estimated to be worth $67, was taken. Entrance was effected by removing a board from the window on the west side of the building. The imprint of a large bare foot upon a table in the store directly under the window and the imprint of a number eight shoe leaving the rear door led to the arrest of a man who had left Thorndale on the first train out after the robbery. No evidence was found implicating the man and he was later released.

FORTY YEARS AGO...

The rural community of Elevation just south of Milano was ravaged by a tornado. There was a lot of destruction, but no one was killed in the storm.

Paving of the busy Copeland Street main thoroughfare to Rockdale’s Little League complex moved one step closer to reality as a result of action by the City Council.

Gilbert Bernstein, the only business manager the Rockdale School District ever had, submitted his resignation in order to accept a position with the Denton School District.

The 24th annual Parade of Bands Concert, featuring five school bands encompassing approximately 360 band students, was set to be held in the high school auditorium.

TWENTY YEARS AGO...

At least half a dozen businesses and homes along US 79 were flooded when a brief, but staggeringly heavy, thunderstorm dropped between 2.5 and 4 inches of rain on portions of Rockdale.

The Texas Railroad Commission turned down a request from Neighbors for Neighbors for a rehearing on it petition to stop Alcoa’s 3 Oaks Mine in Bastrop and Lee counties.

Rockdale ISD voters elected Dr. Dee Ellis and Lee Jenkins to the school board in two contested races Saturday and returned unopposed incumbent James Birkhead.

Rockdale High School students had a “tornado contest” in the school’s cafeteria and patio exhibiting man-made tornadoes as part of a statewide tornado awareness project.

TEN YEARS AGO...

Milam County Sheriff David Greene announced he was switching parties and would run for re-election as a Republican in 2012. Greene was elected as a Democrat in 2008.

There were three contested races to decide in the annual spring balloting day, two for the city council and one on the school board. Melody Dawson and Steve Pruett were candidates for the east ward council seat being vacated by Gerri Offield. West ward incumbent Doug Calame was challenged by Gary Darby. On the school board ballot, Kent Bowerman was opposed by Henry Miller for Place 7.

Their 35-year relationship was described as a marriage during discussion at a Rockdale City Council meeting, but the city and Rockdale Fair Association were, as they say, “having problems.” Council members tabled a proposed “memorandum of understanding” between the city and RFA after association board members asked for language they felt would provide advance notice in case the city disposed of property and/or buildings at the park. The weekend of June 11-12 was shaping up as a huge one in Rockdale with the second annual Big Blue Band reunion, followed by the 77th annual Rockdale Homecoming.
