100 YEARS AGO...
Rockdale’s five-day Chautauqua begins Saturday of this week and all will be in readiness for the first number Saturday afternoon. Judging from advance information the Chautauqua program to be presented to our people beginning June 4 and last for five days, will be superior to any Chautauqua program ever presented. We have had some good Chautauquas, but the headline features of this one seem to stand out by themselves as being highly meritorious.
Commencement exercises of the Rockdale High School were held at the City Hall Auditorium and, as is always the case in Rockdale, the auditorium was crowded with the friends and relatives of the graduates. The program was given and diplomas were presented. A feature of the exercises, and one not heretofore seen in Rockdale, was the presentation of the robe to the Junior Class by the Seniors.
FORTY YEARS AGO...
Milam County’s grand jury returned 37 indictments following a busy session and also cleared the Rockdale Police Department of any wrongdoing in connection with a 30-year-old man’s apparent suicide death in the city jail March 29.
A two-day-old baby girl was in good condition at Richards Memorial Hospital after being abandoned overnight in a weed patch just north of Highland Street.
Veterans, county officials and relatives of Milam County war dead were amount the crowd of 200 people which gathered on the northeast corner of the courthouse lawn to dedicate a monument to the memory of 216 county citizens who died during wartime service to their country
Four members of coach Barry Bynum’s Tiger baseball team were named to the all district squad selected by 23AAA coaches.
TWENTY YEARS AGO...
Alcoa was to file a pollution control permit application for Sandow Power Plant Units 1, 2 and 3 by Sept. 1. A full year ahead of requirements spelled out in a bill on Gov. Rick Perry’s desk.
One year and one month after major financial problems stalled the expansion of Rockdale’s city library into the adjacent Vogel building, the library board was seeking ideas. “The dilemma is where do we go from here,” Ann King, library board chairwoman, said.
Spring and summer were the usual times for work days at area cemeteries, but there was a unique one set. The cleanup at the city’s Jewish Cemetery was being organized by a 12-year-old boy of Plano as his public service project leading up to his bar mitzvah in October.
The first annual “Rockstock” drew a small but enthusiastic crowd to see cars, bands and tattoos at the Recreation Hall on US 79.
TEN YEARS AGO...
It worked, at least so far. Cost-cutting measures put in place earlier this year by the Rockdale ISD, in anticipation of a massive reduction in state funding, appear to have prevented both a tax increase for district taxpayers and saved the jobs of RISD teachers who wish to continue in the district.
After 10-1/2 years on the bench, 20th District Judge Ed Magre announced he would retire June 30. Gov. Rick Perry was to appoint a successor to serve the final 2-1/2 years of Magre’s term, which expires Dec. 31, 2012.
Five persons were indicted by a Milam County Grand Jury in connection with last year’s six-month, Rockdale-based drug investigation.
Deputy Sheriff Mike Clore led the investigation which culminated in the arrest of nine persons and discovery of a methamphetamine lab.
