100 YEARS AGO...

Next Monday is Trades Day in Rockdale, and in addition to the usual premiums offered by the merchants the day will feature a championship baseball game between Thorndale and Gatesville. These two towns both claim the amateur championship of Central Texas and the game will no doubt be the best game played in this portion of Texas this season.

Rockdale is the home of another new lignite mining company this week, and actual work started Monday on the construction of the mine plant, the sinking of the shaft, etc.

W.E. White of Rosebud received a message stating that J.S. Watson of Rosebud, a former business associate of Mr. White, died suddenly of acute indigestion while in St. Louis. He was buying goods for his store when he was stricken.

The Roundtree home was the scene of a very delightful affair on July 21 when Dr. and Mrs. Rountree entertained with 42 complimenting their house guests Mr. and Mrs. John B. Rountree of Paris, Texas. The spacious lawn was beautifully lighted and very attractive with the gaily and varicolored flowers.

40 YEARS AGO...

The gleaming new 3,000 square foot George H. Patterson Civic Center had its grand opening with special ceremonies planned to mark the occasion, according to Milford Henry, chairman of the city’s civic board.

Milam County Appraisal District mailed notices to property owners whose 1981 property values increased by more than $100 over the 1980 values, according to Ed Wrinkle, the chief appraiser.

There was lots of dough given away last weekend when the Rockdale Sweet Shop held its grand opening at the southwest corner of Bell and Main.

Eight lettermen returned for the first day of two-a-day workouts at Tiger Field, according to RHS head coach Tootie Roach.

20 YEARS AGO...

US 79 was on the fast track. The highway widening projects stretching from Rockdale’s Kountry Inn to the Rocky Creek bridge were ahead of schedule.

It wasn’t quite a farewell appearance when state Rep. Lois Kolkhorst met with around 20 people at Fair Park, but it felt that way. Milam County was placed in an urban-oriented District 20 with Williamson County in a redistricting plan approved by the state legislative redistricting board.

10 YEARS AGO...

At midweek, City Council members were in the midst of a marathon four-night—Monday through Thursday—discussion of a new city budget. Monday and Tuesday discussions were dominated by the need for a new fire truck after Fire Chief Herbie Vaughan told the council the age of the RVFD fleet will begin to affect fire insurance rates in upcoming years. Price of a new pumper was put at $350,000.

Deedra Jacob, owner of Rockdale’s Little Tikes Day Care Center for the past four years, has been named the new president of the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce. Cindy Jerman, Chamber board chair, made the announcement Monday and Jacob started her new job that morning.

Almost 100 young men showed up for the first day of summer practice for Rockdale football. Up just slightly from last season, Miller said it is about what he and his coaching staff expected.

A new sign, replacing one with 10 letters missing, may just be the start of improvements at Rockdale’s Patterson Civic Center. The Rockdale Municipal Development District (MDD) discussed improvements to the center in its Thursday meeting with board president Gary Griesbach recommending hiring a firm to compile a master plan for the center. “It has a lot of possibilities,” Griesbach said.
