100 YEARS AGO…
C.W. Maston of Dallas has bought the Dixie Theater from E.I. Wade. Mr. Matson is an old picture show man and promises to make the Dixie one of the best show houses in Central Texas. He announced that it will be operated every day from now on.
Rockdale Ice Factory announced it will no longer have a man at the ice house to deliver ice after noon on Sunday or after 6 p.m. on weekdays.
Through the instrumentality of the Chamber of Commerce, Rockdale had located a new produce establishment and turkey killing plant. Mr. H.E. Blenden is an experienced produce man and has associates and business connections which connect him up with the best markets of the country. He will buy turkeys, hens, geese, ducks, springs, eggs, butter—in fact a general line of produce.
P.E. Luckey had the old Gill hotel building thoroughly overhauled and rebuilt, the improvements including a new front and roof. When completed Mr. Luckey will move therein and operate it as a rooming house, something that is badly needed in Rockdale. The house has 14 rooms.
40 YEARS AGO…
Shari Spence won Grand Champion Steer at the Rockdale Fair and Rodeo. Her steer was purchased by Rockdale State Bank for $4,489.50 and she also won a $1,500 scholarship.
Lisa Spencer was crowned Miss Rockdale Fair Queen at the Patterson Civic Center. Runner up was Tricia Weiser of Cameron, and second runner up was Donna Shraeder.
Homecoming Royalty was announced. The Homecoming Queen would be one of the following: Donna Schraeder, Lisa Coelho, Debbie Korenek and Tracie Sutton. Class princesses were Karen Kirk, Michelle Jones and Lisa DeGhetto.
20 YEARS AGO…
A 250-pound pet tiger killed a Lexington boy in an accident both authorities and family members said was a tragic accident.
The 1976 state champion Rockdale Tigers were honored at Tiger Field complete with their own run through spirit sign. The reunion also featured a pre-game reception and a day of activities at Rockdale Country Club that included a round of golf and an afternoon get-together. Three of the state champion coaches were also on hand, Dick Weigand, Fred Johnson and Lew Simmonds.
10 YEARS AGO…
Rockdale Police and the Milam County Sheriff’s Department swooped down on two suspected drug-dealing locations Saturday and Monday as part of an eightmonth, large-scale drug sting operation. By Wednesday 21 persons had been arrested, including nine Rockdale residents.
Saturday’s first annual MAP Run, starting from Rockdale VFW Post 6525 raised about $4,600 for the Military Assistance Program and drew 55 bikers and 10 riders, according to Rod Roderick, ride chairman. The day at the post also featured a silent auction, prize drawings and the VFW’s fall chili cookoff.
The second annual Ride For the Cure, benefitting the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, is set for Oct. 29 at Cliff’s Tavern in downtown Rockdale. Categories include motorcycles, hot rods and antique cars.
