100 YEARS AGO
The enrollment in Rockdale Public School was 448 against 410 the same date in 1920. Superintendent Marshall reports the attendance practically up to the enrollment figures. Some of the grades are badly crowded but the teachers and students are all making the best of conditions, realizing that this is the last year in which the old building will be used. The high school department now numbers 106 which is the heaviest enrollment for this department in many years.
Hamilton and Fergeson Grocery Store was advertising all cuts of meat for 15 cents per pound and a 48 pound sack of Kansas Flour was $2.25.
The entire citizenship of Rockdale united in paying the last tribute of respect to the memory of Pvt. Hicks R. Carlile, killed in battle in France during the works war, and whose remains arrived here on Friday afternoon.
40 YEARS AGO
Rockdale State Bank announced that it was joining NBC of Texas.
Lisa Coelho, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gus Coelho, was crowned 1981 Homecoming Queen. Miss Coelho’s escort was Tiger footballer Brant Burleson.
Rockdale Community Education and Milam County Extension Services announced a “Holiday Magic” program on Nov. 9 at the Patterson Civic Center. “There will be exhibits and decorations made and displayed by two designers from the “World of Christmas” in Austin,” according to Vicki Allen, Community Ed director.

Meggie Debault, daughter of Craig and Lisa Debault, was crowned Miss Rockdale Fair Queen 2001 at the annual pageant which was held in the RHS auditorium. First runner-up was Danielle Donnelly, daughter of David and Deta Donnelly. Second runner-up was Valerie Shelander, daughter of Vanice Shelander and Wesley and Judy Shelander.
Kayla Freeman of Rockdale Junior FFA exhibited the grand champion steer of the 2001 Rockdale Fair.

Milam County has had a new “landmark” for about a week. An oil-gas well blew out early Sunday morning and a crew of specialized firefighters are hoping to douse it by this weekend, ending the towering plume of black smoke that’s been visible over several counties. Since Saturday. Firefighters from Milano, Rockdale and Black Jack, plus emergency responders from Burleson County and the Milam County Sheriff’s Department, were called to the Polzer No. 1 Well, off CR 328, about five miles south of Milano, at 1:50 a.m. Saturday.
Nobody had a more memorable 2011 Rockdale Fair than Mason Leifeste of the Cameron 4-H Club. Just two weeks after his sixth birthday he showed the grand champion lot in commercial heifer competition and the reserve champ market steer. Together Leifeste’s two lots of animals sold for $9,290. Luminant bought the grand champion steer from Jonathan McAnulty of the Cameron FFA for $10,965. Added money made the total $11,665. Memories were made all over Fair Park whether it was listening to country legend John Conlee or just ‘monkeying around’ at the carnival.
Thursday’s visit by the Capital Area Food Bank at the KC Hall parking lot might have been the largest since the monthly distributions began. Vehicles filled the parking lot and a long line formed for the free surplus food. The distribution relies totally on volunteers and Denise Sifuentes, organizer, expressed appreciation to all who helped with Thursday’s effort.
