The Milam County football classic was to be played between the teams of Rockdale and Cameron High schools. Because it was Armistice Day, and a legal holiday, it was estimated that it would be the largest crowed ever assembled in the county for a football game. Anna Maie Prewitt

Anna Maie Prewitt delightfully entertained the Merry Maids Club Friday evening with a “42” party in honor of Helen Douglass of Taylor. Fruit punch was served throughout the evening and at the conclusion of the games Clara Cooke and Wesley Blackburn were found to hold the highest scores. 40 YEARS AGO

A domed house, the first known of its kind in the immediate Rockdale area, was going up in the Western Hills subdivision just west of the city limits and the pre-fabricated structure is being built Jimmy Cox as his home.

A surprise roast for Reporter publisher, W.H. Cooke, was held at the Patterson Civic Center. A huge sign painted by The Reporter’s advertising manager, Henry Tyler, read “Tonight’s Menu-Roast Turkey.” Roasters included Rev. Don Box, Sam Peebles, Emory Camp, Bill Avrett, Linwood Mehaffey and Mike Brown, former Reporter editor.

The RHS’s Big Blue Marching Band, directed by Jim Perry, took the first step toward a sixth-straight Sweepstakes Award by receiving a Division 1 (Superior) ranking in UIL Marching Contest held at Waco’s Tyson Field.

20 YEARS AGO

Rockdale’s swimming pool park was officially renamed Veterans Park during the city’s celebration of Veterans Day which included a parade, celebrations at all school campuses and a meal and dance at the VFW.

The country home of Gene and Darlene Rek, east of Rockdale on County Road 334, was extensively damaged by fire when a “loaner car” exploded in the residence’s driveway.

10 YEARS AGO

Construction on the first of four planned “gateway monument” signs for Rockdale was announced after after a ground breaking ceremony was held Saturday morning at the intersection of FM 908 and US 77 at the airport. Bobby Pelzel, who is heading up the project for the Rockdale Municipal Development District (MDD), said two signs will be erected on US 77 and two more at each entrance to town on US 79 (Cameron Avenue).

The Rockdale Noon Lions Club was participating in a county-wide food drive, according to Kathy Cooke, club spokesperson. “We are collecting canned goods and/or cash donations for the Rockdale Food Pantry again, at The Rockdale Reporter,” she said.

Milano Elementary School Kindergarten/Pre-K teacher Neva Caffey was one of three “lucky winners” of the “kiss the pig” fund-raiser held by the Milano PATCH Club.
