The first pre-Christmas entertainment was given when Mrs. Ben Lowenstein Jr. opened her spacious home “Waldeck” to the San Souci Club and other guests. The entire lower floor was brilliant with holly berries, poinsettias and narcissi. Forty-two was played throughout the afternoon. Mrs. W.A. Coffield held high score among the club members and was awarded a lovely dresser runner. Miss Irma Dunnington was given and attractive incense burner for guest high score. The following delicious and artistic menu was service on gaily decorated luncheon trays. Turkey, dressing, chipped potatoes, cranberry jelly, grapefruit salad, olives, Russian tea, Charlotte-russe, caramel and spice cakes. Miniature Santa Clauses were given as plate favors.
Noack & Backhaus had on display at their store this week a decided curiosity in the shape of a “hairy” chicken. The chicken was a young rooster of uncertain breeding, who, in place of feathers, was covered with hair. Only on the wing tips were there any feathers, and even those were of doubtful quality. The chicken was the subject of much attention and discussion for several days. Mr. Noack stated that he did not know where it came from, having been found in the usual motley assortment of chickens coming to the store during a busy day in the poultry business.

An elderly, prominent, Milano-area couple died late Tuesday night after both were shot in the head at Richards Memorial Hospital in what police are terming a “homicide-suicide.” J.C. “Jake” Barfield, 77, died in the room. His wife, Margaret (Dot) Barfield, died at Cameron’s Central Texas hospital, where an AMR ambulance had stopped while attempting to transfer her to Scott & White Hospital in Temple. “It’s just a tragedy,” Police Chief Thomas Harris told The Reporter. “I’ve known the Barfields for probably 30 years and they were as nice a couple as anyone you could ever meet.”
Generally “heart warming” isn’t a term that gets applied to awards banquets but there’s no other words to describe Travis Fisher’s win as Firefighter-of-the-Year Saturday. Fisher, one of the youngest members of the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department, was announced as winner of the RVFD’s top award during the organization’s annual banquet in the VFW Hall. Fisher is the third generation of his family to win the award. His father, Wayne, was Firefighter-of-the-Year in 1987. His grandfather, Tom, picked up the award in 1988. Both were on hand Saturday to share in Travis Fisher’s big night.
