100 YEARS AGO....

It was the headline Rock-dale had been waiting four years to see: “Homeward movement has already started.” American soldiers were starting to head back to the U.S. after the end of World War I, hampered by the French railroad system being used almost totally to transport food and supplies throughout the war-ravaged country.

Latest flu victim was Sgt. Carroll Woody, 30, of Camp Douglas, Arizona. His father, Col. W. B. Woody of Rockdale, was a Confederate veteran who fought in many battles, including Gettysburg.

New Milam County office holders were to take office Dec. 2 including L. L. Blaylock who was to serve out the remaining term of the vacancy caused when Sheriff Allen Hooks resigned.

What The Reporter termed “the best rains in three years” brought some welcome relief to the Rock-dale area, but arrived with a cold front that brought ice and some light snow.

FORTY YEARS AGO....

A field maintenance supervisor for Southwest Milam Water Supply Company survived a shock from a 440-volt transfer pump at the water company’s well on FM 486.

A bid opening on the Rockdale ISD’s bond project was set for the RHS auditorium. The package was to provide for a new junior-high school, elementary expansion and air-conditioning the high school.

The Promenade, Rock-dale’s mini-mall, opened on the northwest corner of Cameron and Main (US 79 and FM 487). It featured six stores.

Lexington went to 11-0 on the season with a muddy 14-0 shutout of Bartlett in a bi-district playoff game at Taylor’s Memorial Field.

TWENTY YEARS AGO....

Milam County Appraisal District directors were facing a Dec. 1 deadline which Alcoa said was the deadline to act on an out-of-court settlement over the aluminum company’s litigation to have its taxable values lowered.

A Brookshire Bros. official sad the company was “leaning toward” rebuilding its Rockdale store, destroyed in a July fire, but warned “it could still not happen.”

Rockdale ISD Community Education held a coat drive for needy children, collected 300 coats and had already distributed 230.

The Rockdale Tigers won an area championship with an exciting 13-6 upset of Marlin and were set to tangle with No. 1-ranked Newton in a regional contest.

TEN YEARS AGO....

Construction was said to be on schedule at Luminant’s new Sandow 5 power plant with the 581-megawatt facility to go on-line by August.

City council members were fine-tuning an already pared-down policy which enabled city employees to take home city-owned vehicles.

One of three men charged with two recent convenience store robberies in Rockdale was convicted of aggravated robbery in 20th District Court, one had been indicted and the third had turned states evidence and was assisting the prosecution in cases of the other two.

Rockdale rolled over Cleveland 17-9 in bi-district football action and was to face Carthage in area. The 9-2 Tigers had amassed the most wins for a Big Blue team in 10 years.
