100 YEARS AGO…

The “Owl” Restaurant, by Messrs. C.H. Landis and J.A. Thomas, was formally opened to the public and the occasion was celebrated by the proprietors by a public reception, the serving of a free lunch to all callers, and by band music by the Rockdale Boys Band.

The YWA met for a hot tamale dinner and had a brief business meeting. They decided to have their Christmas party at the home of Miss Louise Hale. Club president Miss Banthaf said, “Come and bring a little gift for the tree and have a jolly good time.”

40 YEARS AGO…

Carl Peters, 41, who coached 2A Tidehaven to a 26-1-2 record, including a state championship over the past two years, was hired as head coach/athletic director at Rockdale High School.

The Rockdale High School Future Farmers of America junior and senior conducting teams brought home a Sweepstakes Award, symbolizing the number one FFA chapter in the state, from the FFA State Meet in Huntsville.

20 YEARS AGO…

A 19-year old Rockdale man has been charged with manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance in what is believed to be the first case ever filed here involving the designer drug ecstasy.

Three drives that combined to serve over 1,300 persons in South Milam County were gearing up to be Santas again this year. Delivery days were approaching for Rockdale Christmas Roundup, Blue Santa and Thorndale Cares.

Love’s Flowers & Gifts, Marvin Farek Law Firm and Tisket A Tasket won the Chamber of Commerce’s business Christmas Lights Contest.

10 YEARS AGO…

This holiday season was a special one in Rockdale as an anonymous donor came to the aid of several charities during the past few weeks. Officials of Rockdale Christian Services said that the donor, who wishes to be identified only as “Scrooge,” had made sizable and generous donations to that organization’s food pantry.

And he’s been doing it for several years, organizers noted. More donations from Scrooge were recorded during the past two weeks. A 21-year-old Houston man being sought for capital murder in connection with the death of his girlfriend’s 4-year-old son, turned himself in at the Milam County Sheriff’s Department. Michael Allen Seaton was the subject of a statewide manhunt after Dustyn Skyler Roff died in a Houston hospital.

A Christmas season which began in gloom ended in joy as Christmas Roundup delivered food and toys to an estimated 800 needy persons in 249 family units. In mid-November, Roundup volunteers were saying for the first time the organization would probably have to deny service to some persons this holiday season due to a lack of funds.mous donor made combined gifts of $5,000, enabling the organization to meet its $50,000 goal.
