100 YEARS AGO…

The annual County School Meet was coming to Rockdale in 1922. Probably a precursor to Rockdale Relays, but in addition to sports, academics were also part of the plan including debate, choir and spelling competitions. A special edition of The Reporter came out with advertisers putting on big sales because the expected attendance in our city over the weekend. During the meet a picnic event was held at Fair Park and all of the schools were invited to take part.

Thorndale Mercantile Co. was celebrating 20 years in business and many readers wrote in to say why they had been shopping there for all of those 20 years.

40 YEARS AGO…

A herd of 22 deer was released east of Davilla in northwest Milam County by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department as part of a restocking program with a goal of establishing a permanent deer herd in Milam County.

Rockdale senior citizens were continuing fundraising projects as their new Senior Citizens Center was nearing completion on Green Street.

A crowd of about 250 women attended the annual Richards Memorial Auxiliary Spring Style Show and luncheon, enabling the auxiliary to purchase two pieces of equipment, defibrillator and a bio-feedback machine for use at the local hospital, according to Nan Clayton, luncheon chairwoman.

20 YEARS AGO…

Rockdale police were investigating the theft of about $15,000 from HEB Pantry Foods.

Fred Marshall, a 24-year West Ward city council member, announced his resignation.

Vernon and Doris Ellington, along with 7-year-old grandson Douglas, were not home when fire destroyed their mobile home on CR 434.

10 YEARS AGO…

After a lengthy discussion stalled, and it appeared the matter might die for lack of a motion, the Rockdale City council found common ground Monday and okayed a parking and access easement to facilitate a proposed new business venture. The council unanimously voted to grant access across city property to the former Dollar General building, Meadow at West Cameron (US 79), which is under consideration for purchase by the Aaron’s company, a nationwide rental business. Dozens of barbecue teams

Dozens of barbecue teams were expected to turn Fair Park into hog (and brisket and chicken) heaven when the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce held the first Milam County Festival and Barbecue Cookoff March 23-24.

Thorndale Masonic Lodge 978 presented longtime Thorndale business and civic figure— and long-time Mason—Newton Butts with the Golden Trowel Award. The Golden Trowel was an official award from the Grand Lodge of Texas and was the highest award a lodge can bestow upon an individual member.

Rockdale Rotarians are winding up their annual lawn fertilizer sales and this year they received a helping hand from these RHS Golden Girls who manned a phone bank on March 2 and sold 142 bags. They were guests at the Rotary’s weekly luncheon last Tuesday and the club presented them with a gift of $1 for each bag they sold, plus extra funds.
