100 YEARS AGO…
As per a previous announcement in T h e Reporter, the ex-servicemen of Rockdale and vicinity met and completed organization of the local post, operating under a temporary charter. The name “Carlyle” was selected for the post. It was selected to honor two of our local fallen comrades, Hicks and Wallis Carlyle.
The graduating class of 1922 of Rockdale High School was sending out commencement invitations containing the Commencement Program, class roll and other data. The invitations are in the shape of a little brochure in dark grey imitation leather with embossed inserts, the whole thing tied with grey leather thongs.
Edwin Alfred Eads, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Eads, fell while playing on the see-saw, breaking his arm just above the wrist.
The local high school team administered a 5-0 shutout to Cameron High at Cameron. Fred Green, doing mound duty for Rockdale allowed only three hits and struck out 14 men and got two hits himself.
40 YEARS AGO…
Milam County law officers were searching for a “tall, heavy set man” who Held up the West U-Tote-M store in Rockdale. Police Chief Felipe Martinez said a night attendant, Bobbie E. Cody, was alone in the store when the robbery took place.
Funeral services for a 19-year-old Rockdale man, Frank Cortez Galban, who drowned in Alcoa Lake while trying to retrieve a cap were held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with burial following in the St. Joseph Cemetery.
Rockdale Cub Scouts Michael Walko, Philip Owen and Jason Holstine received Cub Scouting’s highest award, the Arrow of Light, as Cub Scout Pack 789 held their awards ceremony and pack meeting at First Christian Church fellowship hall.
Rockdale senior Dennis Brooks earned a trip to the Class 3A state track meet in Brenham by finishing second in the 110-meter high hurdles. Terry Brooks, Dennis’ brother, was third in the race, just missing a trip to state.
20 YEARS AGO…
Rockdale city and rural route letter carriers collected non-perishable food items to be donated to the Rockdale Christian Services food pantry as part of the National Association of Letter Carriers’ 10th annual drive to help stamp out hunger.
Rockdale school trustees, looking for stability in the district’s band program, met in special session and hired a veteran husband-and-wife team of directors. Richard Whorton will be high school band director with his wife, Sherry Whorton, taking over the junior high band.
10 YEARS AGO…
With two of Rockdale’s four active water wells experiencing “significant problems,” city officials asked residents to conserve water. The two wells were experiencing problems as a result of aging and corrosion, according to City Manager Kelvin Knauf. He said repairs were expected to be completed within 70 days.
A concert by the Prairie View A&M Chamber Singers drew an appreciative crowd to the Patterson Center in the last of five spring fundraisers to benefit the Kay Theatre restoration. Kay Theatre Foundation officials said the efforts made several thousand dollars which will be applied toward restoring the 1940s-era structure as a cultural and performing arts venue.
