100 YEARS AGO…
J.M. Hodges of Wharton was elected superintendent of the Rockdale Public Schools. Mr. Hodges was a strong, thorough school man, and the board of trustees considered itself fortunate in being able to secure his services. He had more than a dozen years’ experience as superintendent, the past six years being at Wharton. He was to attend the university Summer School, after which time he would be getting ready for the coming school year.
Mrs. A. E. Perry was selected to serve as temporary secretary of the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce until a new secretary was found. Mrs. Perry began work and could be found at the Chamber of Commerce headquarters every day until further notice. Parties having any business to transact would find Mrs. Perry both competent and willing.
Mrs. C.M. Sessions was hostess to the San Souci Club. The reception rooms were beautiful in an array pink roses, snowy jasmines, vari-colored nasturtiums and greenery. Mrs. Sessions served grape juice, chicken salad, pimento sandwiches, chipped potatoes, olives and mint ice.
40 YEARS AGO…
Rockdale’s L.B. Kubiak swept to an impressive victory in the Democratic Primary runoff election to claim that party’s nomination for a state for a state representative position now held by his brother, State Rep. Dan Kubiak.
Tamara Hebert, graduating RHS senior, was named the recipient of a $500 Texas A&M University College of Engineering scholarship, according to Dean Robert H. Page. She is the granddaughter of Susie Sansom Piper of Rockdale.
20 YEARS AGO…
Alcoa’s Sandow Mine was recognized in Austin for its “innovative and ecologically sound management of wild habitats” by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department. The award was presented at TP&W’s seventh annual Lone Star Land Steward Awards ceremony.
One of Rockdale’s busiest streets during the school year was “closed for about a week” while construction crews repaired the road surface. City Manager Sue Foster said the portion of Bushdale Road in front of Rockdale Junior High School was closed to traffic.
Sheriff’s Department investigators believe a series of grass fires that kept firefighters from Rockdale to Rogers busy were deliberately set. “Right now it looks like a person, or persons, just went through the county and set fires both on highways and county roads,” Sheriff Charlie West said.
10 YEARS AGO…
With one half of Rockdale’s city water wells down for rehabilitation, and the memory of last year’s record hot summer seared into memory, local residents were—literally—going to be sweating out the repair process for another month. Weisinger Inc. employees were on the site of two wells, located at the H.H. Coffield Airport, US 77 at FM 908, according to City Mgr. Kelvin Knauf.
Rockdale’s Big Blue Band From Tigerland was enjoying a dream trip to Disney World in Florida. A bus carrying the band and sponsors were on their way, thanks to the result of much fund-raising and community support.
