100 YEARS AGO…
The first public concert of the season by the Rockdale Boys Band, under the leadership of Dr. C.E. Wisecup, was given on Fountain Square. There were 21 instruments on duty, and a splendid program was rendered. The boys show up well and their work indicated the zeal and ability of their instructor.
Mrs. T.S. Barkley was charming hostess to the Matinee Musical Club. The music program was thoroughly enjoyed by all present. At the conclusion of the program little Alice Elois Barkley entered bearing a beautiful basket of flowers which she presented to Miss Marshall, bride-elect. Concealed beneath the flowers were many useful and lovely gifts from the club members.
An “All Milam County Fourth of July Celebration,” under the auspices of several American Legion Posts of the county, and with the coop eration of the several Chambers of Commerce of the county, was being planned and promoted by the Rockdale American Legion post.
Mr. H. Wyatt of Wichita Falls was elected secretary of the local Chamber of Commerce, arrived in Rockdale and assumed his new duties as of June 15. He expressed himself as being pleased with his new assignment and stated that rarely does a secretary have the opportunity of working where there are so many natural resources as here—the farming, the lignite and the oil.
40 YEARS AGO…
“Buckskinners,” those who seek to recreate the mountain man life of pioneer times, were to converge on the Rockdale area from all over Texas for a Frontier Days Black Powder Shootout and Wild Game Cookoff.
About 12:30 a.m. Friday Albert Tovar’s pickup plunged off FM 908 at the Brushy Creek bridge and some 50 feet downward into the creek, according to DPS State Trooper Don Wardlow of Rockdale. “He was apparently knocked out by the impact,” Wardlow said, “and didn’t regain consciousness until about 10 a.m. when he climbed back up to the roadway where he was picked up by a passing motorist.” Tovar, 41, sustained some facial cuts which required stitches, and also a number of bruises. “He was very fortunate,” Wardlow said, “not only to survive the crash but also that there was only about two feet of water in the creek.” The pickup was totaled, according to the state trooper.
20 YEARS AGO…
More than 60 persons turned out for a flag dedication at the former Aycock school building, now a recreation center. The event was part of the 100th anniversary Aycock school reunion held over the weekend.
If Rockdale residents of 1952 had any lingering doubts that something special was happening to their town, The Texas Employment Commission’s early summer report was an eye-opener. Oil-booming Odessa was first in the state in new business firms. Dallas was second and Rockdale was third.
10 YEARS AGO…
The parking lot of Meadowbrook Baptist Church turned into an auto and motorcycle show as the church hosted its second annual “Summer Explosion” show. A total of 25 autos and 25 motorcycles participated. In addition to lots of car-watching, the day included music, games and food. Organizer praised the weather, while in the 90s, was a far cry from the 100-degree-plus temperatures of last year.
