100 YEARS AGO…

At the meeting of the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce an order was passed appropriating $50 for a premium to be given the first bale of 1922 cotton marketed in Rockdale. Conditions are that it is to be from the regular Rockdale trade territory and the bale must weigh not less than 450 pounds.

Commissioner H.H. Moore received and extra heavy caterpillar tractor, which he expected to hitch to the large road grader, received on trial, and test the two together with a view of purchasing the equipment. The tractor came loaded in a box car with a boiler for Rockdale people and it was an interesting sight to watch Eb More unload the thing with its own power.

The initial meeting of the junior Matinee Musical Club was held July 30 at the home of Dorothy Lee. A short business discussion was held after which the following enjoyable program was rendered: Piano solos by Elfrieda Schiehing, Annie Rhys Robinson, Dorothy Lee. Irina Wisecup, Lillian Wallis, Amber Estell and Ward Lightfoot. Followed by a piano duet by Pauline Roundtree and Dorothy, a vocal solo by Irina Wisecup and a musical reading by Doreen Orr. At the conclusion of the program delicious refreshments of punch and cake were served. The club then adjourned to meet two weeks hence with Mrs. W.A. Coffield.

40 YEARS AGO…

A 32-year-old Rockdale man was arrested and changed in connection with the knife-point robbery of a Sonic Drive-In customer. Police Chief Felipe Martinez said Paul D. Palmer of Milano came to the police station and reported he had been confronted by a knife-wielding man at the drive-in restaurant while sitting in his car. “Palmer said the man forced him to give up about $70, then fled in an automobile,” Martinez said. Palmer provided a description of the man and the car and a search ensued, ending when Ivory Joe Williams was arrested at Village Courts by Martinez, Deputy Sheriff Thomas Harris and Constable Milton Holmes.

Rockdale’s second annual open tennis tournament-cosponsored by Rockdale Tennis Association, Dr Pepper and Parsley’s Fried Chicken-kicked off with the youth division and would continue with adult competition over the weekend.

20 YEARS AGO…

With two weeks remaining in the month it was already Rockdale’s third wettest July in the 78 years weather records had been kept here.

Eloise Finn, longtime chairperson of the Rockdale Christian Services food pantry, was honored with a reception and plaque presentation at the pantry.

10 YEARS AGO…

Interviews with Rockdale businesses, part of the Rockdale Downtown Association’s (RDA) master plan development project, were set to be held. Tom Manskey, executive director of the Rockdale Municipal Development District (MDD) said CDS Marketing representatives would conduct individual interviews both before and after the luncheon group discussion session in the Patterson Center.

The second annual Brown Santa Golf Tourney was set to be held at the Cameron Country Club. Last year’s tourney drew 94 golfers, over 50 hole sponsors and raised around $5,000 to provide Christmas gifts to 300 children in over 100 families.
