100 YEARS AGO…
Naming her mother, Mrs. C.E. Griffin, of Waco, as honoree, Mrs. E.S. Stewart extended quite a pretty courtesy to 12 of her friends, when she entertained with “42,” on the broad veranda of the Murphree home, in which Mrs. Stewart had been domiciled since her coming to Rockdale a bride last July. The color scheme of yellow and white was carried out in decorations, as well as in a most delightful salad and ice course.
We were unable to get to the returns on the race for cotton weigher, but it appears from all reports we were able to gather that Zeke Alford had been elected. Mr. Alford was engaged in fitting up the old Alford cotton yard on North Matin Street, and otherwise getting ready for business.
Construction of a hospital to be known as the Carrie Yoe Memorial Hospital to cost a sum not to exceed $75,000 for the city of Cameron was the outstanding bequest of the will of Mrs. Carrie Yoe which was filed for probate in the county.
40 YEARS AGO…
Opening up of two dedicated streets was the main topic of discussion at a called city council meeting at City Hall. Aldermen gave the go-ahead to open up a portion of Eiland Street, but not at city expense, and okayed a drainage plan to facilitate the opening of Brazos Street between Childress and Meadow.
Jim Riley was the new postmaster. Post Office Sectional Center Manager Norman B. Adamson announced Riley’s appointment and swearing in ceremonies were set. Riley, 43, was a native of Oklahoma and had worked for the U.S. Postal Service for the previous 18 years.
U.S. government surplus cheese would again be distributed from St. John’s United Methodist Church, according to Louis Rinn, chairman of the distribution.
20 YEARS AGO…
It may have rained more than 11 inches in Rockdale between June 25 and July 16 but the deluge hardly slowed down the Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) US 79 widening project.
Rockdale ISD received a grant for $135,000 from the Texas Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund (TIF) to facilitate the integration of technology into the curriculum.
Alpha Tau Delta chapter of Beta Sigma Phi presented Ethel Throckmorton with its Lady of the Year Award for 2002. The annual award was presented as part of the sorority’s Legacy Tea. Presenting the award was club president Tammy Officeld.

A 46-year-old Rockdaleman was indicted for murder by a Milam County Grand Jury. Stephen Lenard Daniell was indicted in connection with the May 6 shotgun slaying of 49-year-old Sheila Owens in her driveway at 804 N Wilcox.
Luminant and Milam Appraisal District (AD) formally ended their litigation over 2011 values for Power Plant Unit 5, filing an agreed judgment in Judge John Youngblood’s 20th District Court.
Milam County commissioners tabled a resolution to apply for a Texas Parks & Wildlife grant to construct a park at the foot of Sugarloaf Mountain. County Judge Dave Barkemeyer said the problem was one of timing, with the county facing a July 24 deadline to submit an application for what might ultimately be up to a $100,000 grant, with the county providing a matching grant or in-kind labor.
