100 YEARS AGO…
George Wickline, engineer from the State Highway Department, together with a Federal engineer, has made a location for the proposed new bridge over Little River, to be used instead of the McCown crossing. The point which they selected for the bridge site Is onefourth mile northeast of the McCown bridge. This new bridge, the cost of which will be borne equally by the State and Milam County District 2 will constitute a viaduct for two State Highways.
The Camp Fire girls entertained in honor of the Bryan basketball boys last Friday evening at the home of Mrs. C.M. Perry. The spacious home was thrown open to the guests and dancing was the feature entertainment of the evening. A large punch bowl was in the dining room to which the dancers retreated between dances. The guest departed after expressions of a delightful evening spent in getting acquainted with the Bryan visitors and mingling with “home folks.” All declared Mrs. Perry a most charming hostess and entertainer.
The Reporter would be glad to receive photographs of Rockdale scenes taken in the early days of the town’s history, to be used in newspaper articles. Citizens owning such pictures will confer a favor by lending them to us. At present we have in preparation an article for one of the state papers for use at an early date. If you are willing for your pictures to be used in this manner, please don’t delay, but send them in at once.
There were 59,543 bales of cotton, counting round as half bales, ginned in Milam County from the crop of 1923 prior to January16, 1924, as compared with 44,080 bales ginned to January 16, 1923.
The Athletic Association, under the direction of the Junior and Senior girls will sell sandwiches and coffee Friday afternoon on the campus for the accommodation of the visitors
40 YEARS AGO…
Carl Peters, who coached Rockdale High School football teams to a pair of 3-7 seasons submitted his resignation last week and school trustees have begun the search for a new head coach/ athletic director.
A three-vehicle wreck involving two 18-wheelers and an auto closed the SH 36 Little River Bridge for an hour-and-a-half Tuesday afternoon.
20 YEARS AGO… Rockdale ISD trustees hope to have a new head coach/athletic director hired by March 29. Walter Pond, superintendent, said about 200 applications have been received to replace Casey Creghan who resigned under pressure from the school board.
What may have been the largest Rockdale Band Boosters Spaghetti Supper ever netted about $4,000 Monday.
10 YEARS AGO…
When the roads in Texas are icy, nothing happens— no school, no meetings, and as local law enforcement agencies would have liked it, no driving. A cold front that brought with it sleet, light snow and ice hit Milam County and surrounding areas with a bang on Thursday night, causing road and school closures on Friday morning.
