100 YEARS AGO....
About 200 Cameron boosters came to Rockdale as part of a countywide goodwill trip. There were speeches by Rockdale Mayor E. A. Camp and County Judge W. G. Gillis. “Every church bell was rung and whistle was brought into service,” The Reporter noted.
The American Party met in Cameron and nominated a full slate of candidates for all Milam County posts going before voters in the November general election.
Max Ferrari returned from a film-renting trip to Dallas. Ferrari owned Maxie’s Theater and Rooftop Garden where first-run films were showed outdoors on the roof of a downtown building.
Rockdale schools were set to open Sept. 15. Rockdale High School had received certification to teach two units of French to replace the two units of German which had been dropped during World War I.
FORTY YEARS AGO....
Groups from Rockdale and Milano met with three state agencies in Austin to discuss what they felt were road hazards caused by numerous trucks transporting gravel from the Austin area to destinations in Robertson and Burleson counties.
A 16-year-old resident of the Mary Lee Village Foundation near Rockdale drowned in Cade Lake near Caldwell.
State Representative Dan Kubiak of Rockdale received the Outstanding Legislator Award from the Texas Vocational Administrators and Supervisors Association.
A new traffic pattern was announced for Rockdale’s newest school campus, the junior-high school on Bushdale Road. Finishing touches were being put on the structure.
TWENTY YEARS AGO....
With legals questions over the validity of holding an election concluded, voters in the Rockdale Hospital District were headed to the polls to decide whether to increase the district’s property tax cap from one to 50 cents.
Little change was anticipated as Rockdale and Milano students headed for school on the first day of the 2000-2001 school term but the Thorndale ISD was anticipating an enrollment increase of about 100.
One hundred and five hopefuls turned out to Tiger Field in heat that almost reached that number to begin the 2000 football season for Coach Casey Creghan.
Fire gutted a laundromat in an apartment complex in the 1700 block of West Cameron Avenue (US 79) but quick action by the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department kept the blaze from spreading to nearby apartments.
TEN YEARS AGO....
The Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department held a “Summer Bash” at Fair Park, complete with a barbecue cookoff and a “swimming pool” (metal stock tank).
“Where the Wild Things Are,” the final in a series of summer films, was set to be staged outdoors at the Kay Theater.
Rockdale was set to host Elgin in the first pre-season scrimmage at Tiger Field. Coach Jeff Miller said Big Blue was planning to emphasize its running attack more in 2010 than in the past.
