Milam County small business grants
Two weeks ago, the Commissioners Court approved a grant for up to $10,000 for any Milam County business located in and doing business in Milam County.
In just two weeks we received over 70 applications! So far, 27 applications have been approved and payments will be made very soon.
One million dollars of American Rescue Plan Act funding was set aside by the court for the program. Anyone interested in applying should not delay.
The application and guidelines are listed on the Milam County website at: www.milamcounty.net/page/milam.smallbusinessgrant.
No tax increase for Milam County
Every year, the county must prepare a budget and run the myriad of functions based on projected tax revenue. Over the past weeks we have prepared a 2022 budget.
The good news is that there will be no new tax increase. The tax rate will remain the same as it has been since 2018 at .73 per $100 of valuation.
The total amount of taxes one pays may increase as property values continue to rise in the county, but the rate will not increase for 2022.
Property clean up
In 2019 Milam County undertook a massive cleanup of property located on the east end of Rockdale, just off US 79. The cleanup cost over $270,000.
Pursuant to the Texas Health & Safety Code, cleanup costs may be recouped by the sale of the involved property. On Aug. 2 the property sold for $128,500. As this did not reimburse the county for the full amount of the cleanup, additional properties will be sold in the near future until all cleanup costs are recouped. Milam County will continue with property clean up throughout the county.
