Milam County Small Business Grants
Three weeks ago, the Commissioners Court approved a grant for up to $10,000 for any Milam County business located in and doing business in Milam County that suffered a loss of revenue during the pandemic. We have received over 100 applications.
One million dollars of American Rescue Plan Act funding was set aside by the Court for the program. Anyone interested in applying should not delay as the program will end when the funds are expended.
The application and guidelines are listed on the Milam County website at: http://www.milamcounty.net/page/milam.smallbusinessgrant.
Workforce grant approved
The Texas Workforce Commission has awarded Temple College and their partners Affordable Interior Solutions Inc., Butler Weldments, Mine Services Inc. and Whinstone US a $124,001 Skills Development Fund grant.
The grant will be used to provide custom training to 61 new and incumbent workers for industry-related topics in response to the impact of COVID-19.
Training will be offered in COVID-19 Safety and Sanitation in the Workplace, Human Resources and Employment Law, Technology-Information Networking Systems, Frontline leadership, Workplace Mapping and 5S (Lean), and a refresher course for CDL training.
Internet grant submitted
Milam County submitted a $10.5 million grant application with NTIA last week. If approved the funds would be used to lay 294 miles of state-of-the-art underground fiber in Milam County.
The six cities in the county; all seven schools in the county; all county governmental and city services; all public libraries, public housing, all medical providers, all public safety and most of the estimated 700 businesses in the county would be connected to fiber.
Fiber allows the signal to travel at the speed of light and provides the fastest broadband service available.
We should know by Dec. 1, 2021 if our application is approved.
COVID in the county
Last week we reported our 54th death in the county and our cases continue to rise. 80% of the new cases are of the Delta variant, which is much more transmissible. Below is a chart of positive cases by age group in the County.
